Hello everyone,
I love to surf fish.
I am wondering whether to get my basic license, this year.
At 73 yrs. and as an Oregon resident for only two years,i don't Qualify for a senior or life time license, for another three years.
However, I can still get my regular license, and tags at the regular rate.
Do I correctly understand that system?
Maybe I'm wrong but, if I do pay the full rate for a license... I'll more likely spend more money on, gear, campers, boats, beach rental, dinning, and a few other things, right?
But I have been wrong before!
Just sayin'

Salmon Sturgeon tuna are additional tag. Shellfish License. If you hunt a sports pac is good I always get duel rod endorsements
Welcome to the stage, Shaddick.
Not quite sure of your quandary, actually.
It seems kinda like you asked..."if I get a driver's license, & then I suppose I'm going to be driving, therefore I will need to purchase gas and oil and windshield wipers, pay for insurance and parking."
Well.....yeah...called natural progression.
Are you asking if you should NOT buy a license, in order to avoid purchasing the accouterments that make fishing...fishing ?
I guess I am confused.
Either way, please DON'T go fishing without a license, even if only crabbing or clamming. The fines are hefty, not to mention that the ONLY reason that we have plentiful fish stock, and boat ramps, and restrooms, and cleaning stations, and picnic tables, and parking spaces, and even the very roads leading to all of the aforementioned amenities ....is because of license fees.
My full-bore license was something like $130 for the general, the salmon tag, the two-rod endorsement, & the lower Rogue "Wild steelhead retention tag".
I have yet to get a shellfish tag or the Columbia Basin endorsement, which would push the tariff to well over $150 for the year.
Not at all cheap for initial investment, but highly worth the cost, IMO, because of the adventure, fun and food to be garnered from that investment....over many, many days throughout the year.
But then I have plenty of buddies who pay a greens fee of that $150....FOR A SINGLE ROUND OF 18 HOLES OF GOLF !!!
And while I have a nice wide selection of rod/reel combos and a plethora of lures and flies, my entire collection of fishing gear is barely the $$ equivalent of one of my buddy's set of clubs...and he has more than one bag.
I guess what I am saying is, yeah..once you head down the path, you should be prepared (and hopefully able) to equip yourself.
Of course, if you just stay home and drink water...absolute minimal expenses.
Choices, choices...what shall you do?

Welcome Shaddick,gotta pay to play!!
All hobbies are expensive
Fix or fish,
Thanks for the reply. Of coarse you are right.
My point is, I may be dead of old age by the time I'm eligible to get a senior or a life time licence in Oregon at 76. I have owned property here for two years.
For me it is a matter of principle...
I'll NOT get one. It's a very small protest, but very important to me.
Still, talking about fishing, is why we are here.
"Matter of principle" to NOT get one ?
Meaning.... that you are simply NOT going to fish at all... because you can't get a senior license yet ?
And your "small protest" is against....what ?
Pricing ?
Do you feel entitled to some consideration because you have owned property in the state for 2 years ?
(If that were a criteria for reduced fees, I've been here since '84, they oughta be buying me gear by now !....hehehe)
Dang guy...I am confused about your stance and what it gains you......again. And simply have zero clue as to the "principle" you speak of.
Just please, don't be a scofflaw. Good way to incur severe fines.
Not to mention, utilize facilities and accesses and FISH, that your fellow Oregonians have paid for....not nice, not fair.
You do consider yourself to be "a fair guy", don't you ?
Making a stance out of principle is supposed to have sound logic, or something close to it. What I hear you saying is your cheep. We have a beautiful state because of those reasonable fees.
Shaddick- Where are you from that makes you feel so entitled?
I moved here 56 years ago and still don’t qualify for special treatment.
I buy license, tags, shellfish, Columbia River endorsement and though I don’t like the cost I view it as a way to get out, eat well and teach my grandkids about the great ecosystem we are surrounded by. It’s worth the $150 for all the above and support our sport.
Just to add a bit, I moved here in 1980, still have a couple of years to get my senior discount. But I Really feel that the fees Are reasonable. The joy that one gets being out in this Beautiful state , even if you don't catch a salmon, is worth every penny. If you don't make the small investment, you may not even spend half as much time out doors . I'm guessing you are pretty healthy and thinking being out and about has a lot to do with that. If you break it down, it's not even 20$ a month, way less than a membership at a health spa... Invest , enjoy, be happy...

You need to be an Oregon Resident for 50 years and be 65 to get the $5 license. I been here a longtime but still have 20 more years before I qualify. License and Boat registration is why we have boat ramps and hatcheries and all the cool stuff Fix explained.
Hello again,
Thank's.
I needed that.
I think I might even have been wrong.
Let's get back to fishing again, huh?

License are required. You asked by the way. Go for it anytime.
You lived in Oregon 47 years but only owned property for 2 years? Your Drivers License is what is used to determine how long you been a resident.
