How’s everyone doing, I’ve been doing a lot of freshwater fishing this winter. Especially in lake takanassee it’s been mainly pan fish and small bass but in this past week I’ve hooked into 4 pickerel one being over 3 pounds, needless to say they caught my Interest and if anyone has some advice for targeting these fish please share

!/4-1/2 oz. Spoons, tie good knots and ultralight gear is not recommended.

Well Surfcaster, I have never fished for pickerel, but I have caught Northern Pike up to 40”. I have to believe they are the same critter which ambush darn near anything that passes in front of them. They hang out near wood and weed edges looking for an easy meal. They will hit crank baits, spoons, live bait, darn near anything you put in front of them.
Good luck!

X2
Get them now while the weeds are down. Keep using the lure you caught the three pounder.
My favorite lures are spoons and storm wildeyes. Later on floating rapalas fished over weeds. Shiners under a bobber work great also.

Your not gonna believe it but it was on a crappie magnet under a bobber

I believe it they hit anything. I use a small jig with a grub and bobber for crappie. That too gets hits from pickerel and bass.

Some good sized catfish in that lake as well. Very little angling pressure.

I used to get them in shallows near a deeper channel on a warmer or spring day on live minnows or shiners below a bobber to keep the minnows suspended and out of the mud. Spinner baits work great for them when the water warms up a bit.

Absolutely. A few years ago a young guy (12 or so) got one big enough that it made the APP for breaking a record. I'm not much of a freshwater guy but Deal Lake has some very nice sized largemouth bass waiting for anglers.

Cedar water below dams and spill ways. I like going in the pine barrens of south Jersey. I used to catch a lot in older flooded cranberry bogs!
