Amazing grace, How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now I am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved.
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed.
Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come,
'Tis grace has brought me safe thus far
And grace will lead me home.
The Lord has promised good to me
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.
Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease
I shall possess within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.
When we've been there ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun,
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we've first begun.

Ah yes RJ, the most common hymn heard at funerals. Had a bag piper come out of nowhere at my FIL's burial and the tears became rivers.

This is a GREAT song. I personally would love to hear Tom Waites sing it to the tune of “the House Of The Rising Sun”, the two song work perfectly together.

This hymn was written by John Newton who sold human beings in the slave trade in the 1770's. He changed his ways upon finding this "Amazing Grace" and became a strict abolitionist. One should read about his life to really appreciate this hymn.

Thanks, RJS for posting!
Yes Big dog, Waites unique voice would be really cool.
Here's some versions I found out there:

Wow!!! You guys are on it musically!!
I'd love to hear any of your suggestions regarding this great tune.
That said, and I love that song and am a Christian man, always was and always will be.
One thing I (as well as tons of other people) have discovered is that the words of the Bible are Living.
Meaning that this ancient book, that should be out of date, never becomes out of date.
It always speaks to us in different ways seemingly when we need it.
Bob, I felt the same way about you sharing this story today of all days.
My Step Brother-in-Law, a good and gracious man passed away unexpectedly a week and a half ago of the same thing that took John Ritter of Three's Company fame. Aortic Dissection, I think they call it.
Tim's funeral was on Friday. I was still fighting off a nasty cold during the funeral. It was a rough one to get through. It really was.
And, of course, they played Amazing Grace. I love the song, as I have said. But to think that I could sing it at a funeral for my fallen brother is a big stretch. I couldn't sing it, of course. And just stood and mouthed the words until I lost it. I had to sit and just gather myself to make it through the service.
I carry blue shop towels around instead of Kleenex. Kleenex never really does the trick for me. If anyone hands me a box of Kleenex, I politely decline it and pull out my roll of Shop Towels. I can check your oil and blow like a champion.
The coincidence of RJS, sharing the tale of that song today is almost mind blowing to me. Tim is in a better place, though there will be a massive void. His giant church was packed to the brim.
Unfortunately, I will never be able to sing that song without losing it.
Maybe that's O.K.
Who knows?
But thank you for sharing another great story with us, Bob.
Musky John: Please read the other post about Amazing Grace. John Newton was a terrible man, a slave ship captain and one would never think of him being converted, but he was. And wrote Amazing Grace! If he can be forgiven and saved, anyone can if they are willing to confess, turn and believe. Just Sayin...RJS
Hey Bob,
I read them both. I wasn't sure where to respond.
It's just crazy that you sent that today, of all days.
I think I picked the place that I did respond because of the cool ideas that everyone had to appreciate that song further.
Thanks Bob.
Have a good day.

One of my favorite hymns.
"How Great Thou Art" still makes the hair stand up on my arms when I hear it; even in my shop on the radio.
I have sung it and the Lord's Prayer many times at funerals. Have had to turn down a few requests for friends and relatives after seriously choking up while singing at my now-ex wife's grandmother's funeral. Still sing, but not for those I knew...too rough for me.
Marvelous tune, exceptional lyrics.
