Wind Turbines

Several years ago, there was a ‘dust up’ of complaints about the Wind Turbines that had sprung up around the country. These complaints were Wind Turbines were unsightly, ruining the beauty and view of what was formerly prairies and hills.

It is very possible that I am wrong, but what I believe is those who were complaining were those landowners who were not receiving a royalty check paid for each Wind Turbine placed on their property.

I could be wrong and would appreciate being corrected, but the royalty payments for Wind Turbines are roughly the same as having an oil well, with its pump jack and storage tanks, all of which take up more room and are much greater likely hood to be destructive to the local environment. Wind Turbines do not produce an abundance of crude, salt water, and another toxic or unwanted residue.

Granted, there are birds killed when they fly into the blades of a wind turbine. But some birds are killed when they fly into large plate glass windows, thinking they have a clear pathway, but it is just a reflection.

To my knowledge and recollection, there have been no complaints about those collisions.

The editor of the Saint Jo Tribune printed several of these letters. In response, I wrote him and asked how many of these complainers had oil wells on their property. Or how many had neither Wind Turbines nor oil wells and were simply not receiving any compensation for either? Just how many owners with income from oil wells or wind turbines were complaining about such equipment ruining the view? As usual, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, or the one receiving a monthly paycheck!

Within a week or so, the editor published my letter and to the best of my recollection, there were no more letters complaining about Wind Turbines. Just Sayin…RJS

Yes, you are absolutely right!
In another incident, there was announced that a Muslem Mosque was to be built in one of the smaller bedroom cities near Houston.

Some of the people objecting to this, were proposing that a lot next to the mosque be used to raise pigs! I am sorry but do not recall the outcome, but think nothing came of this idea. Just Sayin...RJS

They are proposing putting a wind turbine within 1/2 mile of my home. I don't give a darn about a royalty check. This turbine is suppose to be the biggest in our state over 700 feet high plus they are putting it on a hill. From my house I will see at least 4 of the wind turbines on the skyline. I grew up in the country seeing only God's skyline and I love that. These things are not only eyesores they have other problems affecting people's lives like Flicker, the sunlight being interrupted constantly, Noise, the peaceful country life interrupted, the danger of this thing coming apart, and when it has reached its life span of 10 to 15 years who will remove this eyesore? The sad part of all of this foolishness is one nuclear plant would replace 2000-3000 of these wind turbines. The nuclear plant would produce power 24-7 the wind turbine maybe 50% of the year. Ice can render them useless. In my case I still don't know where that power will be going. Possibly to Canada. I say if that's the case install them there so the moose can deal with them. The Carbon footprint of making them and trucking, installing, digging in the powerline putting up the substation etc. outweighs the savings they produce. That's my 2 cents.

I always have to chuckle at the "Carbon Footprint" remark.. let's see.. construction of a Nuclear power plant.. Trucks, Dozers, Cranes, Concrete plants etc etc.. for YEARS just to build it.. The Staffing needed to run it every day of course driving cars and trucks.. Maintenance using heavy equipment, and waste disposal. This never ends... also gotta put power lines and substations whether it's Nuclear, Wind, Hydro or what ever...

There are windmills all over our state.. our sunlight doesn't blink on and off like a strobe light.. and if one of them encounters catastrophic failure, I'd much rather be by one of them than an out of control Nuclear plant...

Just my 1½ cents..

well as long as we are giving our 1.5-2 cents of high valued wisdom let me add my 1 cents to the discussion. there is no such thing as any energy source that has no effect on the environment or that doesn't come with risks. but when all is said and done from construction, operating and decommissioning when it's useful life is done, if they were honest I would bet natural gas would be either the top or right close to the cleanest energy source for both heating and producing electricity

Yes, I agree. There would be no tank batteries, pump jacks, and just a wellhead, then underground pipeline. Just Sayin...RJS
