redonhead31.
I use to live a 1/2 mile from the lower Detroit river. Fished it for more years than I care to remember. The 1st 2 weeks of April were the best times for me. But all of April is good.
I used to target the spawning females early, just because there are some very big fish caught at that time. Lot of locals get out earlier than that to target spawning females. Weather is iffy in March, along with ice
Floes coming down from the Lakes breaking up. There are lots of guides that work the river. Might be beneficial for you to hire one for a day and get the hang of the area and techniques.. shorten the learning curve.
You might want to check out the
Michigan Sportsman Forums, and look on Deteritriver/Lake Erie dedicated forum.. Tons of info and folks who fish the river…

There are a number of hotels at I-75 & West rd in Woodhaven and I-75 & Northline rd. in Southgate that cater to walleye fishermen with truck/ boat rigs. They fill up fast. Check the Downriver Walleye Fisherman

Hi, I now live about an hour from the river after living out of state for 20+ years. What's the best bait/method? Used to be 3/4 Oz Jighead with minnow bouncing the bottom.

Hasn’t changed much. Depending on water depth, wind and ability to keep line vertical you can go with a lighter jig. Plastics of all kinds are widely used, lots of fisherman use stinger hooks as well, especially early in season.

Steve.. there is also a small but mighty group of anglers who only hand line the Detroit River. Year in/year out these fisherman just hammer the walleyes. In local tournaments that I have been involved in, (years ago)they were top producers. Their method of fishing keeps the bait/lures right in the walleyes face almost 100% of the time. Wind does not affect the presentation as much as it does jig fisherman, especially higher winds. .. This method was the only way to go years ago. They catch all manner of species with this technique as well.
Steelhead, salmon, trout, bass, muskies, etc..

The bucket list trip is approaching soon. You guys will limit out in around an hour or less. There will be plenty of boat traffic though your guide will be proficient in navigating through. One of the hottest colors in minnow plastics is (pimp daddy). Purples, motor oil, and naturals including blacks are fire. Jig heads 3/4 oz. - 1 oz. with cycle hooks are deadly in chartreuse, black, brown, combo swirl colors. The time of the year that you will be floating is such a HOT bite that almost everything will get bit. Another overlooked presentation you should try is pulling crankbaits medium to deep divers like reef runners and flicker shads. You will get the most action jigging the bottom like 95% of the boaters so those other techniques are good afrer you limit or making your way back the the start of your jigging drift. Good Luck, Tight Lines, stay posted!
