Just getting started (again) in kayak fishing, and wondering who else on the forum fishes with a kayak or knows some good sources of locations to launch and fish.Would like to meet up with others since my wife insist that I don't fish alone, and I don't care to either. Too much can happen. Haven't talked her into letting me buy a boat and really haven't decided on which model I want. I have that champagne taste and a beer budget. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. Thanks, God bless, keep your line tight and keep on fishing.

Good evening. I live on the coastal bend and fish out of my kayak. If I’m not fishing out of it, I’m using it to get me to an area where I can wade fish. When I fish out of it I usually drift fish the flats around here during the warmer months using top water lures early and late. Then switch to soft plastics on a jig head something like the Down South or Cocaho baits. During the cooler months I start fishing in deeper guts off of the flats working the soft plastics slow near the bottom. There’s plenty of places you can launch your kayak between Aransas Pass and PortAransas along both sides of the causeway. On the southwest side you can access Brown & Root flats and on the northeast side you can access the Lighthouse Lakes by paddling across the Aransas channel. I hope this helps you😎👍

OF77, I’ve been wanting to get into yak fishing as well but my wife wont allow me to go out alone either because I’m diabetic. Maybe we could hook up one of these days and find a spot. Live in central Texas too but spend half of my time in the west matagorda/lavaca Bay Area. Plenty of spots there to launch and fish.

Thanks Dirty Dog, sounds like we are in the same predicament. I live in Muldoon, which is about 7 miles northwest of La Grange. A trip to the coast is about at least 1 hr and 45 mins, but well worth the time (if I catch something). Where do you live? I'm still looking for the right yak for me but with so many choices, it's hard to decide on just one. I'm retired so I can go any day of the week. Let's keep in touch and perhaps just meet up if we're close enough, if nothing else but to talk yaks.
God bless, keep your line tight and your hook wet.

Sounds great Old Fisherman. I live in New Braunfels but have a house on the bay in Port Lavaca with a ton of launch sites within a few miles of the house. I’m retired as well so as soon as it warms up a little it’ll be time to get out. Let’s stay in touch for sure. God Bless!!!

Thanks, and will keep in touch. We're really not that far apart. Come on warmer weather. My home number is 979-242-5222, we hardly ever answer the phone due to Medicare Plan calls and a mistake I made about asking for info on walk-in tubs. Just call and leave a message and I promise to get back in touch with you. FYI they call me Robert.

Sounds great Robert. My names David and you can reach me at ddahse15@gmail.com to get off of the main social site. Maybe we can meet up at Greene Hall one of these afternoons to talk fishing.

Hello and welcome OF. I fish many spots around port Mansfield- arroyo city - SPI. LOTS of fun Waiting for weather to change. I ended up mounting trolling motor to my yak so I could cover more area and not fight wind and currents so much. I still go by myself but would always welcome a partner. krm0677@yahoo.com.

Hi OF77. My wife and I make more outings in our yaks than we do my BassCat P2. We recently made the move from paddle to pedal power, buying a Hobie Outback and Compass. Peddling not only frees your hands up more to fish, but extends your range since you're propelling yourself with bigger muscles. Those yaks also allow you to stand, which is a game changer for an old back. We've actually caught our PB's in yaks. We liked several other foot-powered models and didn't originally plan to buy Hobies, but the pedals adjust for leg length vs sliding the seat, and since we have short legs the Hobie design allows us more standup room. Many folk are now putting trolling motors on their yaks, too, but we're not there. Just look at the type of fishing you want to do and your physical abilties/limitations and see what you think will work best for you. There are groups on fb, etc, where you can look for used yaks. You should be able to find a good used one to meet your needs, and starting used will save you money.
We live in SETX and fish rivers, bayous and lakes such as Steinhagen and Rayburn around here. Haven't hit the salt, yet. We love going up to Caddo Lake up north. Also have fished Inks Lake, staying at the state park. Caught my PB bass and catfish there. You can go on the TPWD site and look for small lakes as well as state parks (https://tpwd.texas.gov/fishboat/fish/recreational/wheretofish/). I know there's a lot of rivers in CTX as well. Ask around. Look at GoogleMaps for prospective put-ins and fishing spots.

I was wondering about the paddle kayaks so thanks for the info on them. The ones I’ve looked at were a pretty penny on price so kind of quit looking but if they’re worth it I may reconsider. Definitely not interested in a motor tho, don’t you have to get tpwd tags for them and register every couple of years?
