New to the area, glad to be here. What is the best bait for catching a shark? I know cut bait works,I recently went online and got certified to harvest sharks.

Out of my billy wack I don't fish for shark try local bait and tackle shops for information. Try local TV and Radio fishing reports. Wood's and Water magazine is a good source of information.

Wings from cow nosed rays are used a lot around there, but you'll need to get the rays first.

Up here, Bluefish filets with the skin on, work well.
Welcome to the stage Cmaxx.
I've had success with Myan cichlids and lizard fish.
I've heard that catfish and lady fish are good too.
Not the biggest sharks the bull shark ate the cichlids and the other shark ate the lizard fish.
I use a bonita under a milk jug for a bobber.
I fished the Skyway Pier a couple of nights ago. There were not many fisherman. No sign of bait in the water that usually is surrounded by greens. The birds acted like they were starving. I’ve never seen the area so deserted.
Is this a coincidence or has the red tide and pollution of the bay killed everything.
As for bait, I guess it depends on how large a shark one wants to catch. The bigger the bait the larger the shark. Although I’d like to catch a 300lb monster and I do have surf rods in my arsenal, but nothing I’d care to use to catch a really large shark. Up to 50 lbs or so is big enough especially as I fish by myself usually. I’ve caught several on lady fish. I just chunk and store on ice during the day and fish at dusk.
I didn’t know there was a shark catching class one needed to take. I just used the methods I’ve used to catch jumbo blue cats.
Please tell me about the class.

Thanks for the info., I've been fishing early morning when high tide is in.
Mullet is a good bait, I use a 309 Penn bait caster. Ray wings are great, you use to be able to buy them, but haven't seen them for years. If you're fishing off a pier or bridge, be sure you have a way to pull them up. Best way is a weighted treble hook tied to a heavy cord, use a shower hook (the old metal type) to attach it to your fishing line when you drop it down it will end up in a good place to hook the fish.
It looks to me Florida is trying to discourage shark fishing. I always catch and release anyway but lots of rules and regulations. So I think I'll continue surf fishing as usual and fishing for drum or catfish or whatever picks up the bait. I’m not going to target sharks at all. I love to catch fish. I love to eat fish. I will continue to catch and release while others continue to enjoy their catch on the table as they have a right to do.
We owe the shark shortage to the shark fin harvesters. Once again not Homo sapiens. Homo destroya.
