I like in southwest Wisconsin right on the Mississippi river. I have run trotlines in the years past and have used crickets as bait and done pretty good but would like to do better. I am curious if there are any others on here in my area that use other types of baits. If so I hope you will share.

Rich in WI.

What do you catch on your trot lines with crickets? My dad used to run a line every once in a while, he was fishing for catfish and used chicken livers.

We have baited with Chunks of ivory soap and caught channel cats. It’s not the best bait but it works in a pinch.

Channel cats are not very picky as you well know Mike. I've caught them with a belly full of cottonwood seeds. Did you hose your soap down with WD40? They like that too.

Get a perch trap and bait with livies.

Is that legal where you're at Charlie? Here in California that would get you a double fine. No trot lines allowed (angling is defined as a closely watched rod blah blah blah) and using "game fish" for bait is forbidden.

Cat fish, channels, blues, and flathead. Also get carp which I don't want. I have tried chicken livers but have a hard time keeping then on the hook.

Don't think perch are legal in WI.

Mike you got my curiosity. How did you come about to use ivory soap? You said in a pinch. Oh and did that mean no bath on Saturday? LOL

Lol. That was a trick my Dad showed me when we couldn’t get Shad or crawl daddy’s. Sure do miss that guy.

Yes. Perch are totally legal here in Texas for bait excluding crappie.
You chicken liver guys ought to try chicken hearts. Stay on the hook and work great.

The only live baits that can be used here are rough fish, minnows and for cut bait. I'm thinking of trying smaller raw shrimp next year. Have any of you ever tried shrimp? You guys are not in my area but I am happy to hear from you guys and what you have and are using. I know Blues and Channel will bite on anything, but Flathead which are what I prefer seem to like live bate over anything else.

Gold fish (aka)Baltimore minnows works great for flat heads if you bait shops have them you can also find them at a pet store they call them feeder fish. Blue gills works good also if it’s legal in your area.

Shrimp or chunks of chicken breasts that are marinated with red Kool-Aid. Chicken breast really holds up well and channel cats love it.
