I'I've been thinking about wading fishing for a while now and the thing that's been keeping me from doing it is the fact that i can't swim. I'm in louisiana and the river I'm going to has a muddy bottom I'm not sure how deep it is and I've never went and fished there before but I've watched a video of a guy wading the river so i know its shallow enough to wade (is that the singular word for wading?), i don't have any waders so i was thinking about putting on some shorts and my work boots to see if i like it. My biggest fear though isn't drowning due to the fact that i can't swim its being bitten by i copperhead, every time I've fished a river i always see a few swimming down it. Do they swim under the water to? If this river is like any other in LA and if they do i wouldn't be able to see them what if i step on one lol. I know a snake probably wouldn't go out of its way to bite me but I've heard copperheads are pretty aggresive, what if ones floating down the river behind me and bumps my leg then bites me hahahahaha that would be pretty funny but yea I'd really love to go wading and even if its not a good idea ill most likely end up trying it anyway.

edit: forgot about water moccasins i see those more often then copperheads

Just be smart. Wear a lifejacket or tie a safety line to a tree on the shore. Oh and watch out for alligators.

You should be fine. Copperhead ain't got nothing on water moccasin. I've waded my whole life, got an aunt in Morgan city, La. and I waded down there too. So far , ive lived through it all lol

Just pay attention, there is usually a higher spot in the creek, it may zig and zag, sometimes you may have to get out of the water and bypass deep runs on bank and then get back in to wade.

I've waded with snakes coming and going and as long as they are on task, they'll stay on task. Im not worried about them in the water like I am in low hanging trees, fallen trees and when traversing the bank.

Don’t know anything about wading or LA but as far as I know both copperheads and water moccasins swim primarily at the top of the water unless hunting. Most snakes would rather just get out of your way than bother attacking something so much larger than themselves unless cornered or threatened. I’d say gators and strong currents would be your biggest risks.

Some good info by these guy, If you see a snake with just his head out the water, It's just a water snake not a cotton mouth, copper head. or a rattler. Don't get close to the rattler (it will have it;s head and tail high out of the water) he will be pissed. Never saw a copper head in the water, don't know about that. If your in a boat and get close to a rattler he'll get in and take over the boat, he can have my boat and has on occasion

Wouldn't do it, especially in shorts and work boots. If it has a muddy bottom, you are going to fall down.

I saw you can't swim.

With the waders if you use them put on a raincoat after you put the waders on under the pfd. Help keep the water out if you slip or go under.

If your hot cut the sleeves off.

Can't swim? I am with the stay out of the water group. Good chance if you do, just might see you on the news. Oh and that part about critters in the water, you are now NOT at the top of the food chain.

Suggestion: Go to the YMCA and learn how to swim first.
