Hey all you beautiful people in the fishing world. I am going to try steelhead fishing for the first time. I need to know what I need to get. I am talking everything Rod, reel, line, bait, the whole nine yards. Also for any of my fellow fisherman who live in ohio on this page and might have gone fishing ( Ben Bragg cough cough) where the good areas in ohio to catch steelhead are. Any advise would be helpful.

Hey Aaron
The best fishing for steelhead is on either side of Cleveland they streams that come off of lake Erie. One of my sons went up there a couple years ago. He jig fished off the bottom. You can fly fish with streamers. I think there is a season for steelhead. I grew up in your neck of the wood Leipsic. Good luck

Beardman...... you grew up in Leipsic? Yeah that is my neck of the woods coming from Arlington. I know steelhead are running right now because a buddy of mine has a few people he knows who have gone. I thought about going to Cleveland so that might help confirm my wondering if that is a good place to start.

Hello Aaron,I disagree with beardman, the best steelhead is here in Washington, but thats just my opinion lol,I can't tell you anything about your area but the tackle should pretty much be the same, the steelies in my area tend to be line shy and spook easy,I was taught to use good quality line as light as possible, Maxima Ultragreen in 6# is my favorite,a long limber pole, power light, action slow, this helps to act as a shock absorber and setting reel drag light to also compensate for the light line.beads, small corkies and small jigs work well, smaller presentations seem to work best, even small spinners can entice a bite. And don't get discouraged if you don't get hit right away,I've put my gear through the same school of fish dozens upon dozens of times before one finally takes it.Good luck, have fun and be ready for a hell of a fight

Best Steelhead fishing in Ohio is the Rocky, Chagrin, Grand and Ashtabula rivers. The are still catching them now but not as many as a few weeks ago. As others have said there’s a million ways to fish them. I’ve had a lot of success over the years with a using a slip bobber, with a Maribou jig tipped with maggots and a small minnow. Best if you have a long flexible rod (noodle rod) for that but most any combo can pull it off. There are also a ton of fish caught casting spoons. If your going to come up this way PM me. I’ll try to put you on some fish. Could definitely use your kayak but that’s a bit dangerous in this weather.

I would get a guide.... What you learn from them in a day of fishing will be worth hundreds of hours on your own and also you can try the gear before you buy it. I've fished for them for 50 years and you want to be as close to the bottom as possible.

Here’s a link to an article on Steelhead fishing around CLE. I also know of a kayak guide who goes after Steelhead and Walleye in the Rocky River.

Thanks J. I might have to look into that here soon. Once I get a new rod, reel and bait. Now at least I have a valid excuse to go to Bass Pro Shop and spend more money on another rod and reel. My wife is going to be so happy ( said no husband ever) Lol. Also J whe I am thinking about it I am sorry I never got that chance to hook up and fish with you this su.mer. I got extremely busy with my job and people not showing up. Would you you be interested in going out this year?

No problem at all on not hooking up to fish this year. My work was the same way this year. Not to mention how screwy the last couple years have been. Of course I’d still be interested in going fishing with you. If you don’t make it up here before we ice over the steelhead run in the spring as well. It I can come down by you. Either way let’s hook up this year.
Tight lines
J
