Charity question

Anyone know if a good charity where you can donate fishing and outdoors equipment to like a kids organization or wounded vets ?
I’ve got a small stockpile of rigs I’ve put together from equipment I’ve retired. Most of it well maintained, just dated.
I could probably outfit 6 or 8 starter tackle boxes just from the stuff I have in cold storage and on my work bench.

I’d sell it off , but If a disabled vet or some kid who’s been dealt a bad hand could have it and call it his own and enjoy it…
Well that would be worth more than the few bucks I could get out of it.
Might even become someone’s favorite special lucky rod.
I think we’ve all had one of those. I’ve had several and most I didn’t buy outright when I was younger.

If you guys and gals know of a legit charitable organization , I’d go for it.

Let me know

Maybe you could just hang out around a VA close to you, strike up a conversation with one of the vets. Ask if they fish or would like to. You may wind up with another lifelong friend. It’s the only suggestion I can come up with right now. Good luck and good fishing.

Great idea. I’ll put some feelers out and let you know if I hear of anything. That’s pretty awesome of you to think of that👍

Ben check this blog and see if any are close to you and would want the stuff.
https://shopkarls.com/blog/fishing-veterans-day/
10 different ones. The closest I found near you so far was in Minn.
https://www.veteransonthewater.com/
Send out some Emails and see if they want to come by and pick some up for Vets to use and have after they go fishing.

I’m thinking I won’t be alone in this cause.
Don’t know any of you personally , but collectively a lot of you folk are like family.
And I’m sure a lot of you have stuff you would like to clear out.

I think we need a champion for this. Not me ! I got way too much going on.

I think this needs further discussion.

Ben... There is an organization called **Take a Vet Fishing, Inc.**,and our local branch is @ Branford , CT. PO Box 664, Branford Ct. 06405. I'll let you know when I locate their phone # from our post coordinator once I can contact him.
They are a registered 501 (c) (3) charity.
They run about 10 - 20 events, each year, fresh and salt, with help from the retail, business, charter boat , and other entities , having served a claimed 7,000 Vets as of 2017, the last year reported on their website. My Local American Legion Post has participated in these events, for about 7 years, but last year WE had Covid concerns about their distancing protocols, and were having financial hangover from Covid ourselves. We needed to devote most of our time not spent on critical Veterans support to fund raising, or we would have had to close the doors. The Community and volunteer support we got was fantastic, and if another bad year can be avoided , we should be OK.
The way things are going at present, we anticipate that a new round of state mandates vis a vis Covid will be instituted soon. After that, we will begin to plan our appropriate and doable Spring to Autumn event schedule.
Their site mentions setting up other chapters elsewhere, and offers help, so perhaps either of us can find something close to you in Ohio.
I'm swamped right now with medical issues, problems at home, car broke down yesterday, etc, so it will be a while before I can devote too much attention to this, but will not let it slide entirely.

I always try and help out those trying to help others. When I feel bad about how my body feels, I go down to the VA Hospital and see what bad really is. Then my aches and pains seem more like the minor things that they are. Gpd love them all.

Yeah, the things you see there are pretty sad, indeed. I went there for a while, but was not pleased with the number of administrative snafus that led to missed appointments, unexpected multiple annoying cancellations, and mediocre treatment. I'm not disabled, and not a combat Vet, so had always avoided going there out of consideration and respect for their needs. Then I needed expensive therapy, and no longer had my major medical coverage, as I had retired. Was shocked by how little my Medicare covered along with my Part B.
So, I tried the VA. I was disappointed there and began to truly understand the frustrations of the patients. Don't misunderstand me, I'm not saying the entire system is busted, just that I had hoped veterans in my locality could have received better care . I spend a lot of time with vets and their problems can be overwhelming. VA medical issues in my organization are someone else's responsibility, and we try together-to serve the entire gamut of a person's troubles. Very seldom have the level of success that satisfies us, but we do our best, and sometimes it just breaks your heart that you're unable to get the entire job done. Not possible for a bunch of aging volunteers.

Ben, a friend of mine went into a nursing home a year ago. His wife gave me a bunch of old rods and reels. I pulled out the couple of the collectable reels. They were not usable anyway and the rest luckily were kid friendly. I offered them to a friend that is connected to the local Boy Scouts. He could not wait to get them.
