I am at the end of my rope in that this laptop 'eats' about 1/3 to 1/2 of whatever I type. Fortunately, I-have a good memory and can re-create anything I've written if I have time to reproduce it immediately.

I have had good results at MicroCenter in Houston. But since I no longer live there and some what stranded. I know Austin is Dell country, but I don't want to pay through the nose for an unknown quality and brand--me.

Always in the past I've bought refurbished units at a much lower price, around $ 200 or so, but am wanting to move up to a solid state drive, which I am told is much faster and more reliable.

Any thoughts, advice? Just Sayin...RJS

Sorry I can’t help you Robert but it’s coming. I use an Apple IPad and it works pretty good. 👍

Ive never used one don't know anything about them but I trust Consumer Reports.. They spend a lot of time testing things in every way they can think of. They are usually spot on quality and price wise.

It sounds like your key board is going out.
You can still plug in another full size key and mouse. This will keep you going.

I threw a key board away last week because the letter "p" stopped working. It happens.

Best of luck.

For a young guy on the stage I’m computer illiterate. I have a THINK PAD my former employer purchased it. He’s the kinda guy that really does his research. He only buys Think Pads.

Good to see you Pixie!!

Are you typing in “word”? You can set it to auto save if that’s what you’re having trouble with. If you are and have auto save set up, then your keyboard may be on the blink. You can still use an external keyboard and connect via USB port or wirelessly through Bluetooth. If all else fails and you purchase a new laptop, ask for one with speech recognition. That way you don’t have to type.

I agree with

J

It’s good to see you Pixie. The bad “P” reminded me of a guy I remember that would always get more frustrated than the rest of us get with computers.

One time my buddy decided to change a bunch of the buttons around like the j was now a p or an R is an O.

You should of heard the guy when he tried to type with it then.

If it wouldn't "P", maybe it had prostate trouble?

I've made several computers work like they did when they were new by reformatting or replacing the hard disk drive, and reinstalling everything - not restoring a backup, but doing a clean install. Before doing that, you have to make copies of all your pictures, documents, and so on. It calls for some computer skills, and you have to have the original installation CD's for Windows and any software.

By the way, you're right RJ - a solid state drive will be a bit faster, and far more immune to crashing from being bumped.

I thought it was crazy the term Solid State drive but read up on it now.

I didn’t figure anything in a laptop in last 20 years would not be SS but I guess it would simply mean it’s more like a memory bank instead of a record player inside there spinning.

FourchonLa: you are dead on. I do use Word with auto save. It is probably the keyboard. I have asked my computer expert, (still in Houston) to research a new unit. I don't need a lot of power, but a reliable unit
that I can use a word processing most of the time. I keep a spreat sheet for Christmas card addresses and that is about it since I no long am working. Back then I had a lot more balls in the air, so needed more power.

Robert,

You are now located in what is called the "Little Silicon Valley".
You can get new, like new, or refurbed to meet your needs for $200.
PM me if you are interested in replacing your current PC/laptop.
I will get you a list of places you can shop on line, that are close-by.

I've had a solid state laptop for a while now and I would say if you get one you won't be disappointed
