Thinking of my little Oreck yesterday, I remember something, he could not swim.
He went every where with us. Did a lot of sailing and fishing the last 2yrs of Steve's life, he was always on the boat with us, even out to sea. I kept his leash on incase he went in to pull him out with. One day, at the dock, my daughter threw him in. To our surprise he sank like a rock in 4ft of water, just stood there on the bottom. Scared us thinking if he had gone in in deep water there was no way we could have saved him. Got him a PFD and tested it.
We assume dogs can swim. Are you sure yours can.

Wow MM. I've never heard of such a thing. Don't see why it couldn't be true though. Just never occurred to me that a dog couldn't swim. Glad he never fell in while y'all were out in the boat. That would have been tragic.
Wow! That's a first for me.
Some dogs don't like the water I ounce saw a lab with incredible blood lines who didn't want to retrieve. When I get a pap I wade in knee Deep and they usually will swim circles around me. I also have a floatation device for a retriever. But alas I lost Bear π¨ in may

I had a bunch of huskys over the years. Not much for swimming that breed. Never went out past where they could stand.
I donβt know about Huey.
First thing I bought him after a leash , food and a Browns Jersey , was a PFD.
He donβt seem to mind wearing it.

That might be the reason he couldn't. His mom was Eskimo, papa was Docsi both dence bodied. Makes me wonder about the bulldog breeds. Body fat would make a difference too. Had a boyfriend in high school that sank like a stone.

Did that boyfriend have a face like a bull dog? π

My 93 year old Mom is like that. Sinks like a rock and never did learn how to swim.

No. Just a hardheaded Danish framboy
My Dad sank like a rock, he'd be walking around on the bottom in slow motion. He was 200 pounds of spring steel and rawhide. Mom floated with even her shoulders out of the water. She was a little plump ...especially where Dad appreciated it!
My English Bulldog Elvis would sink too, always had to pull him out ,but he never gave up, bought and put his life preserver on and hated it ,would buck ,and roll for awhile but then got him used to it in the pool ,but always sucked up water because of his jaw shape too funny, like his Daddy ππ€
We had a Boston Terrier that tried to swim but would sink. She would paddle but you had to keep a hand under her. She would keep trying to climb onto you to get above water.
Many other dogs I have had or relatives had loved to swim. Bulldog breeds are too solid I think to float. Maybe smaller lungs and less flotation.

Pretty sure he has the swimming thing down. He also dives and sticks his head underwater to search for things. Labs have webbed feet which make them better swimmers than most dogs.
Had my JoJo Black Lab beautiful excellent Friend 12 years old
