Well , since I’m stuck at work and can’t fish, I thought I’d share an experience from my past . Mainly to occupy a few minutes of free time. Partly to pass on a lesson learned
This past spring , in preparation for a walleye trip out of state, I bought a supply of night crawlers. To try to keep ‘em cool I thought it would be a great idea and keep em in a separate styrofoam cooler. Good so far .
BUT I got the brilliant idea that instead of fooling with ice, I’d use dry ice instead.
Bad idea. Seems when dry ice melts, it’s carbon dioxide gas is released and displaces the ambient air inside the cooler and suffocates whatever is inside
In this case 12 dozen night crawlers.
Being the smart guy that I am, I should have known this . Being the dumb A$$ that I am , I didn’t put 2 and 2 together until it was too late.
Better idea would have been to freeze A 2 liter soda bottle of water and put it in the cooler instead
Night crawlers swimming in melted ice don’t have much life expectancy either. So this would have been a better option.
Keep this in mind when transporting your crawlers for extended period of time

Ouch, lesson learned
I have been guilty of over-thinking such things myself
Buss bedding (shredded and pulverized newspaper) was always the standard, but Magic Worm Bedding works great as long as you keep it cool and slightly moist. A frozen water or Gatorade bottle works wonders!

If ice or water is INSIDE the bottle worms shouldn't drowned.
Saw a guy put a thermometer on a block of dry ice one time. It took about 2 minutes before the bulb on the bottom exploded. Don’t try that at home

Yea that’s what I’m thinking.
Sometimes I amaze myself how bad I blow it when I should know better.
I’m pretty sure my last words will be “ well s#!t , that didn’t work “

Left my worms in the back of the pickup in the sun for the 15 minute drive home turned them into mush usually keep worms in the cab
The elevation here is around 650 ft. I took about 5 dozen worms dug from my garden with me to Colorado. The cabin was at 8400 ft. We were fishing Plutoro Reservoir about another 1000 ft higher. Needless to say, I was lucky I had power bait with me. Those worms were mush. I also tried taking worms with me to Ontario & that didn't work either. Some company hauls semi loads of Canadian Night-Crawlers to Oklahoma City & those worms are put into containers of a dozen worms then shipped all over the country. My earth worms just don't travel well but they can smell just as bad as a Canadian crawler when they die & rot.
Share and share alike.
Worms are my fishing buddies and go in the beer cooler. Don't care how much they drink seeing how they catch all the fish.
I freeze plastic coffee containers filled with water, They are nice and square (The ones I use anyway). I can fit a couple in a cooler with plenty of room for crawlers.
