I think I need a lightweight canoe, my wife says get a kayak. I plan on 6 mile round trips for fishing. How feasable is that in a bigger fishing kayak?

For me, as a creaky senior, not so great a plan unless I got a trolling motor on it. But for many, it may be fine. I'd recommend starting out with regularly practicing shorter trips. Not so much for avoiding next day muscle soreness, but to prevent getting a cramp mid trip later.
I think a canoe would be better for that distance. It would be more stable and you would be able to move around a little bit
Hell no.
A hobie Pro Anger 15/17 all day. I very frequently go 3-4 miles off the coast of Maui. You can stand and cast, kick while you fish, troll. Or a compas duo with Ama’s. You can paddle it if you need to as well
I fish for mahi, bones, what ever, wherever.
I have fished in a kayak for three years straight. Mine is a 10 foot model that was actually a budget kayak, but was outfitted and accessorized very nicely. I would never consider paddling 6 miles in a kayak unless the kayak were outfitted with a very nice trolling motor.
You would be much better off to buy yourself a small, 12 foot Jon boat with a 9.9 hp motor. You could then troll all the way to your destination and troll all the way back without any effort whatsoever.
If the intended use for your kayak or canoe is for it to be a fishing machine, then you might as well buy a fishing machine, like a small johnboat. For me, a kayak is only for short, easy trips on days with no wind.

I would listen to beaver tooth.
I have a Hobie Outback kayak and I regularly go 10+ miles round trip in the ocean out of Dana Point, CA. I've never owned a canoe, so cannot compare, but I have really enjoyed my kayak, and would do buy again in a heartbeat.
