As some of you know I litteraly rescued a dog from some one who abandoned him because of a bad break up
So far this dude has scored at least an A on every test
Only B+ is an encounter with another dog but the other dog was the ageessor.
Walks great , goes out great , socializes with other people good
Loves ridin in truck.
Still has to meet some of the grandkids im thinking he will be fine.
Met my brother. Took right up to him.
Problem , sometimes my wife enters some space and he growls. He never growls at me.

Suggestions for wife?

Dog immediately shows preference to me. But I’m only home 1 or 2 days a week.
He’s completely chill around her , but sometimes he growls when his space is invaded around her.
Never with me.
Kinda figuring out what’s up that
Still learning this guy.

I get in trouble with wife when her dog barks or growls...not the dog.

Have wife feed the dog and should help. Our dog is nicer to me now that I feed him too.

Hey Ben. Sounds like you got a good dog there.Help your wife interact with the dog more. Reassure the dog that you're ok with the dog bein with her. Help your wife in giving the dog soft commands not firm reprimands until no growls from the dog.
The dog possibly was abused by another female or something. Could just feel threatened that your position as Alpha Dog is compromised by her. Reassure dog that it isn't but she is #2.
Hopefully the dog will come around and accept your wife as #2. However, sometimes if they have been abused, the feelings the dog has are really hard to overcome. Only time will tell. Still doesn't mean you got a bad dog, just more of a 1 person Alpha dog. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress. Steve.

Saw is right on.
The past has not been kind and some thing happened. Males have been good to him.

With some dogs, you become their property to which they will protect. Also your brother is identified as someone like you, for which he respects.

Feed your dog by command. Do not just put a bowl out. It's not healthy for the dog and establishes the pecking order. Bring the dog to a bowl, make him sit and stay, refraining from eating until you give the ok command. Have your wife in proximity when you do command. After a while both give the command in harmony. After awhile, you stop giving the command and let her give the command. This will help establish in a mild way.

Take walks every night with the dog at your side, not ahead, your wife on the other side. This will her establish her as part of an excepted pack and you are the alpha. As the dogs except this we can move your wife into a higher position.

My wife brought back a new born German Shepard that the kids were drop kicking like a football. He would bury his head under the pillows on the sofa to hide.
Time spent together is most important now.

More ways available if you need.

Ben, have your wife carry dog treats in her pockets to feed the dog as she approaches the dog and to reward the dog for good behavior.
Your wife might want to play a game with the dog. Take 1 doggy treat and put it in a pocket (don't let the dogs see where see puts the treat). Then call the dog over, letting him to decide the personable space. Then let him sniff away till he finds his treat. You might have to show the dog a couple of empty pockets than slowly show the treat pocket, make sure you let him smell the pocket.
Speaking of smells, your wife perfume could be the offender.
I sure this helps. Keep us posted.

Sure sounds like a lot of you guys have the experience or been watching the dog whisperer show. I would add Ben but all my options have been mentioned.

Just like fishing, Patience will pay off.

I am with Saw, Pixie and TC has an interesting view as well. Something was ingrained before you got the dog. Time will settle it out.
No bad dogs, just bad humans!

Well, one thing I wouldn't do, Ben, and that's trying a new wife, that would be too expensive. You would be sleeping with the dog in your truck.

Just remember getting rid of a dog is much cheaper than getting rid of a wife

And it's easier to retrain a dog than another wife.

Always Greet your wife first.
Always let the dog know your wife is the Female alpha.
NEVER scold your dog. Nicely explain you do not want him growling at your wife.
Don't reward that behavior by smiling, laughing, or finding it as a positive.

Its seems obvious a female has mistreated the dog so he has trust issues. But who knows the real reason?
Give it time.

Some other good suggestions here as well.

Does he growl at other females?
How does your wife react to the growling?

Good Luck.
