I wouldn't pay $400 for a real to begin with. The pole is where you feel most of the bite. I'll pay more for a pole vs a reel. But that is just me.

I agree with Mr. Wood-e! Unless money is no object, I would not spend that much for a reel. There are plenty of choices at less cost. Just Sayin...RJS

To put it simply. No. Too many other choices and good reels to boot

I completely agree with Slimshady! You can get reels that are more than adequate for a lot less. Just Sayin,.,RJS

I'm gonna disagree. Imagine that. 10 pound braid. Are you gonna be catching 10 pound fish? If you're gonna be catching 10 pound fish with 10 pound braid and a rod rated for 20 pound test line - the reel don't make that much difference. But. If you want to catch bigger fish, say a 30 pound channel cat or a 40 pound salmon, then you should have the best drag system on your reel, because that's what's gonna be doing the majority of the work. Better drag? Higher price. There really is a reason why they charge more for those reels. They're better built, better materials, better specs - just all around better.
So it depends on what you want that reel to do for you. A hundred dollar reel will do the same thing as a 400 dollar reel. To a point.

I’ve found that Very few fishermen can tell the difference between a $250 reel or a $400 reel. Same goes for a rod. If your talking low end rod and reels then yes go for the $250 reel and you can tell the difference.

My opinion as always if it's in your budget n feels good in your hand get it. Personally I won't pay that much $ . I have quality gear that works for me. I was using a zebco 202 reel n a cheap rod when I landed a 30" 12.4lb channel cat n a 30" carp. Mostly depends on what you're fishing for I think. I cast a lot so I like lite gear.

If you are tournament fishing, go for the best. $400 is just a pinch compared to that $100,000+ boat and motor. $400 is money waisted if you are fishing for fun out of your bank breaking $1000 but effective floating aluminum can. $200 or less is all a non tournament or recreational tournament fisherman needs to be competitive with the fish and competitors. I believe if I had the best, most expensive rod and reel made, and KVD had a $69 Walmart rig, I would still lose.

If you spent that much money on a reel, why skimp on the braid

trittle, I think the poster is questioning the need for the higher drag capacity of many expensive reels when using light line. A $400 reel isn’t necessary but a good smooth starting drag is important especially for light lines.

That is the perfect reason for buying a 100,000 boat so you can chase the fish and not worry about a crappy drag.

Did anyone ask what the target species is…and / or why the 10# braid?
In my limited experience with braid, I find the thinner diameter to be a pain as it cuts in on itself on the spool. I also believe I have seen dozens of posts about the same subject and suggesting 20 or even 30# be used for that reason?
