Looking for discussion of fishing conditions in the surf at Montauk. It is a six hour drive for me so before I burn up a lot of gas I am looking for reports of actual conditions.

Rwheeler23: You might check with the state. Google the game and fish commission. There might be some regular reporting there. We have both a fresh and saltwater report here on a monthly basis. Good luck and be sure to post your pictures. Just Sayin...RJS

I will be out there next week. New York State is useless for Montauk. I have not seen a single state report in the last 50 years. Most of my Montauk buddies have either moved or gone onto a higher plane of existence.

I regret hearing that. A state as populated as N.Y. should be more accomodating to its residents. You have a lot of coasts and thus a lot of potential fishermen who would fish there. Just Sayin...RJS

Welcome to the stage Rwheeler. Sorry I can't help you either others may be along. Google and YouTube are great resources. Call some bait shops around that area. Good luck on your fishing show pictures when you can๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘

There is only one bait shop left in town. We used to take photos of people with their catch as they came back to the dock. It was great for a few decades then the years started catching up with everyone. Montauk is not what it used to be but most of rocks are still there. All we need now are the fish.

Iโ€™ve been hearing some good reports but nothing big. Still waiting for the sandeels to start their migration.

I was out there last month with only a few small blues. We have had a couple of cold fronts come through and I am hoping next week they start their migration south from Maine and Massachusetts.

Try NJfishing.com
Yes, NJ.
There is a daily report on there from one of the Montauk party boats. That might be helpful.

Thanks. It is tough finding any surf reports. I will find out Sunday when I get to Montauk and post any reports of finding fish.

Was out there last week on a charter boat. Caught bass one after another, all between 40 and 48 inches. To bad the slot is 28 to 35. One keeper

Great week so far at Montauk. Get to the north side by 6:30am and you will have all the stripers you can handle for 30 - 60 minutes. I am using my Gibbs pencil poppers.
