I am looking to upgrading my reel without breaking the bank and am just curious if anyone has personal experience/preference between the Daiwa Tatula vs the Shimano SLX?

I've owned both, I prefer a Shimano myself but both are good reels. It's really a toss up just depends what you like.

I do trust daiwa. I use their lures every time I go out, especially sp minnows, the quality of all of their products surpasses most.

I’m a big Shimano fan. But you won’t go wrong with whichever one you choose.

I own both Shimano and Daiwa baitcasters and I'm giving the edge to Shimano. Tighter tolerances, seems like better machined parts. The star drag on my Tatula is plastic and one of the arms broke off; the spring under the tensioner knob is loose so I have to readjust it about every 20 casts, and the T-wing level wind is gimmicky--forget about spooling line with a leader knot.

I've used both Rands at one level or another. Don't think you could make a mistake.

I've used both brands, and now have decided to exclusively use Daiwa. I believe their spinning reels are better.

From my experience, Shimano casting reels are better built than Diawa’s, with smoother gears and drag. Having said that I can generally cast further with my Diawa and prefer it for lighter lures. If I had to choose one of them for a day of fishing it would be the Diawa. You didn’t ask about Lews but they hit the sweet spot for me.
