planning a trip to hat creek next week . . .
fire threat has been reduced, but am curious if F&G will resume planting and also whether the fire (ash, etc.) has compromised the water in the creek . . .
visit Burney CA Chamber of Commerce website - lots of links there and folks you can call for information about fishing up there. Good luck. Let us know how you do? Photos please!
i've been fishing hat creek for 40 years . . . had to miss it last year because of the pandemic, and only spent one night there each of the previous two years because of wildfire evacuations at my house, so was looking forward to this year . . .
i'm strictly catch and release, but don't want to make a 6-hour trip and pay for 4 night's lodging if the fishing is poor . . .
thanks for the suggestion . . .
I've never fished up there, but it's sure on my bucket list. Would it be ok to PM you and ask for information in the future when I do decide to go? Nothing specific, just general information like where to stay, eat, stuff like that.
absolutely . . .
after all these years, i know the area pretty well . . .
i have often gone twice a year, once when the season opens and again in the fall . . . but a
lot of angler pressure in the spring, and summer is even worse . . .
but in the fall, there are far more hunters than anglers -- which can be problematic, too -- and a lot more fishing opportunities . . .
as i said, i am a catch-and-release guy so i usually only keep a fish or two at the end of the day for dinner . . .
additionally, the F&G usually clears out its hatchery late in the year and plants a lot of fish, some very large trout . . .
that being said, i am waiting to find out just what conditions will be like if i decide i will go up there sept. 24 . . .
i usually stay at hat creek resort . . . not really pricey (real nice cottages, $125 or so a night) and nearby is JJs Cafe, which offers an incredible menu . . .
regardless, i will keep you posted . . .
Great advice!,, I have been talking to my Wife into Vacationing in Costa Rica,, any advice??
I do and will appreciate it. Do you know how late in the year is safe weather wise? Like when does the snow start flying and how bad does it get?

Thanks for the great advice TOS ,theres a member that posts his very large Trout on here, when you going Chief?
Mid October maybe. Unless the weather is gonna be ugly. Rain I can handle. Snow is another matter entirely. We'll have to see. I's just looking at room prices at that lodge - pretty reasonable in off season and October is off season. What could go wrong?
i've run into snow in october, but usually not too heavy . . .
A little snow might be nice. A little.

I would contact The Fly Shop in Redding as they have several guides (27 last count) that fish Hat Creek routinely. If it has to do with trout or Steelhead fishing in all of Northern California they are spot on. The Burney Chamber of Commerce is only open from 11-2 a few days a week and the last time I contacted them about Lake Britton that is in their back yard they couldn't tell me anything.
One of my favorite trips of anywhere that we're traveled in the world. From mountains to the ocean on both sides with good food, fishing, and friendly people. Pura Vida as all the locals say.
