Hi all,

Thank you for letting me join the group. I registered a while back and have been really enjoying the pics, stories, and tips. This is my first post.

I live in Ventura County, Southern California and periodically stop by the Ventura pier on my way home from work to get my line wet. In September I will be in Big Bear Lake and need to set my gear up for some freshwater fishing. Big Bear Lake is home to Bass, Trout, Crappie, Bluegill, and other species. I am open to any recommendations to prep for that trip ... ya' know, those 2 or 3 must-have lures/baits for these fish.

If anyone has specific experience fishing in this lake and can recommend points or location, that would be awesome!

Thank you again, keep up the fun and positive site!!!
Here's a pic of my wildest catch so far off the pier.

Tight lines & bent poles everyone ... Andrew

Nice horn shark! Search "Fishing Big Bear lake" on you tube, you should see a creator that goes by "urbanoutdoors". He has alot of great info for big bear. Hope this helps.

Welcome to the forum....and enjoy the ride! Lot's of interesting stories, tips, photos, etc. as you have mentioned...including the oddity that you have pictured! Salt water species can get pretty wild indeed, although I suppose the same could be said for certain freshwater fish as well! Enjoy your trip to Big Bear Lake and I hope that it is rewarding!

I have fished this lake a lot for rainbow trout growing up in Orange County. September means the trout are in the western deeper end of the lake toward the dam. If you shore fish the best spot is on the north shore at the first point that juts out just east of the dam. It is directly below a small cabin on the shoreline. The best baits are inflated nightcrawlers or power sit on sliding sinker rigs. If you have access to a boat I would troll the northern shoreline from Grey’s Landing down to the last point near the dam. I caught lots of trout here on orange pattern Needlefish spoons and golden/red rapalas. The other trolling zone is the triangle from Metcalf Bay to Boulder Bay to Grey’s Landing then back. If you want catfish go to the east end of the lake to the Stanfield Cutoff and use cut mackerel or chicken livers. Good luck.

SKUNKED in Big Bear!

Had a wonderful week in Big Bear and was able to get onto the lake three times. I was really looking forward to our rental of a pontoon on morning and we were able to tie up on the buoy next to the "cabin" by the dam. Unfortunately there was a SNAFU with the marina and though I wanted to be there NLT 7:00am we didn't get there until 8:00am. Not horrible, but later than I would've liked.

We had 4 lines in the water and for the next five hours and tried everything; PowerBait, Salmon eggs, nightcrawlers, rubber worms, even corn. Most on slip bobbers set to 20-25 feet and one line I would bounce off the bottom. I even tried some top water bobbers, spinners, and needlefish spoons. Nothing!

For what it's worth, at any given time there were 8-12 other boats and countless people along the shoreline. Only saw 3 fish pulled up in 5 hours.

My daughter did manage to caught a great picture of our national bird flying over our boat. That was cool!

Thanks for reporting back...regardless of how your trip was in terms of catching fish. It sounds like you tried very hard, and put out some creative lures/baits. The telltale signs of nobody else catching much of anything is a sure sign that the fish were not in the mood to cooperate.

Hopefully you still enjoyed the vacation in an overall way aside from fishing....

By the way...for some reason I am not able to open your file after the download. Tried several viewing programs and they all say "unsupported file format". I noticed that the download was only about 15 KB in size, so perhaps it was not the eagle image you had intended? No worries....

Ah Hah...just saw that you uploaded it...VERY nice! Right overhead...spectacular!

I am sorry your party did not have any luck fishing. Sounds like you did everything right but the fish were not cooperative for those 3 days. It reminds us that’s why they call it fishing and not catching. Great photo of the adult bald eagle which are common there in the fall. The prime time for trout fishing is the spring (April/May) after ice out. The trout are in the places you went in the western part of the lake and quite aggressive in feeding especially trolling bikini needlefish.
