Son and his buddy catching cats out of the Potomac just below Arlington Memorial Bridge on West Potomac Park--first morning pulling out some nice channels, next day after dusk, some nice blues. Same spot. What was more interesting were the land characters that stopped by, esp. at night. Well, that's DC for ya.

Tell your son and his buddy… boys, you got some really nice cats. You must have taught them well DC, those smiles tell all.

Great to see young people interested in fishing! Looks like the big bruiser came out after dark...but those daytime cats are equally impressive! Thanks for posting the outing!

Thanks WV Mike - unlike the ones up in your neck of the woods, cats out of this part of the Potomac sadly are too toxic to keep & cook.

Sorry to disagree on the water being toxic. That was over 28 years ago. Now these waters are some of the most pristine on the east coast. These are my home waters and play ground. These cats are delicious 😋 and healthy.

Hi PD-no doubt above Little Falls Reservoir I would string any keepers, but below that I'm a little more hesitant. The attached advisory came with a District fishing license. Limits consumption of channels and bullheads to 1 serving per month and blues at 3.

Being over fished, limits set not due to pollution.

Pixie - except that advisory link is about PCBs. The following excerpt is from a recent Potomac Conservancy article: "Rebounding fish populations are great for recreational fishing, but contaminants in the Potomac’s waters make many fish unsafe for human consumption. Washington, DC recently advised against eating locally-caught striped bass, one of the most popular catches for local anglers and Maryland’s state fish." Elsewhere in the article it mentions catfish populations, esp. flatheads as skyrocketing, so I don't think they're being overfished.
