Close to testing out the motor, filled the hydraulics lines and did a bleed, may need another try as the steering wheel turns a bit before the motor moves. Waiting on the solenoid, then will drain and refill lower leg. Have new spark plugs as well. Will see in next couple of days how successful this is going to be.
After it's ready will show a series of pics from start of the project.

I believe they call the movement of the wheel before it affects the lower unit "dead band" at least that is what other mechanical items that are similar this movement is called. Just Sayin....RJS

Sounds like a little air still in the system Ronnie. Did you get a Seastar system? I put one in my 28'inboard, years ago. Probably the best modification I've done in any boat I've had. Steered like power steering in a car.
Can't wait to see the progression of your project.

That's what I'm thinking, didn't use a full bottle of oil. Solenoid has arrived so will put that on tomorrow and keep my fingers crossed it was the problem. Ready to drain and refill lower gear case.

Hmm thought it was just called ‘play’ or ‘slop’ in the steering??

Hmm just thought that play or slop is just the way it is. I’m only on my second boat, always learning. Will have to look into Seastar.

There are fancier systems out there Bric, but for about twice the price of a cable system you can't beat it. 0 feedback from your outboard or rudder, smooth easy turning from idle to full throttle, and it holds where ever you put it. If I ever have to replace a cable system again, it will be with a Seastar hydraulic system.
I believe that the lower power (under 150hp) outboard system is sold under the Baystar name.
I believe that both are a division of Teleflex.

For my 40hp I bought a 'SeaStar' helm. A 'no feedback' helm is needed in the newer boat motors, with the older helm. If you find the boat steering, left or right, when you let go the wheel, that is torque, and will need to change the helm.
