Aside the difference in size, can you use achieve the same performance using a conventional reel to sling baits/lures compared to a baitcaster?

There's no brake system in a conventional reel, except for the spool tension. If you have a talented thumb, it can be done, but not as well as a baitcaster.

If you say so Fred. I thought they were the same thing. Just two words for the same type reel.

I think the “conventional” reel he is referring to is the spincaster...
(thumb button type with enclosed spool) like a Zebco Bullet.

Well we'll probably never hear from him again, so we'll never know for sure. Can you elaborate on what you were talking about Fred? I'm always willing to listen and learn something.

I thought he was referring to conventional salt water type reels, like Penns. That's a conventional reel in my book,

That may be what he was talking about. I didn’t think about that...

My definition of conventional reels is :revolving spool, star drag, no levelwind, single speed.
All other versions are basically improvements on the original design.
You can cast with them, especially the smaller size ones, but once they get bigger than maybe 2.5"-3" diameter, it's more of a lob, than a cast.

Never thought of it that way, always figured revolving spool vs spinner. That definition could work as well.

I was holding off until the poster’s definition of “conventional” was made known, but like Spirit said…we may never know.
