I have a 17 foot 2014 bass tracker. Great little fishing boat, but one major problem. It is so light it is a real pain when trolling with electric in the wind. Yesterday I tried dragging a light weight anchor with flukes closed, didn’t work! Any suggestions on how to control the back end of the boat? It’s all over the place even in a fairly light breeze.

Welcome to the stage! If you do not have the motor in the water, do it. Much like dragging a chain, the heavy part will be in the very back. BTW your boat is not considered 'light'. Maybe the trolling motor is not pulling the boat as it should. Battery? Smaller wire, not giving enough amps for the motor?

You are correct that it doesn't take much wind to move it around. Of course as mentioned, you do want to have the gas motor down to help out.

I've got an older model of the same boat. I made a bracket for the transom that enables me to (manually) insert a long pole (about 11 or 12 feet as I recall without going to garage to look). That works just as a "power pole" but you have to be in about less than 4' or so to have it work.

I also have a similar pole mounted to my trolling motor that does a (power pole) thing for the front. But same deal, you have to be in fairly shallow water and wanting to remain in one spot for a while.

Depending on where Bert is fishing some places are electric only and the gas motor has to stay out of the water.

PowerPole in shallow water, if you stop to fish, if not they have blades that mount to a partially deployed power pole. If you're always moving, a drift sock is cheaper.

Used to use one drifting along Long Sand Shoal for Fluke. When the wind was against the tide it would mess up your drift. The sock or sea anchor, would keep you drifting with the tide.

Sounds like a good idea i guess size of the craft matters which size sock to use.

I taught my host how to drift fish in his pontoon boat the day i went out with him last week. He is a once a year fisher with his kids when they would go down to NC.

At days end he says he has got to do that again. Warned him conditions aren't always ideal for drifting but by all means take advantage of it when you can.

Use a lot in the Columbia, wind in the gorge vs the current while anchored trying to backbounce, plus keeps nice tension an anchor sometimes one off each stern corner. Not very long lead needed so doesn’t get in the way of fishing as much might think. Can easily pull up if needed for landing fish. Some, people use just to “slow the troll”

Good read Shut thanks for the site. Don't know about that spackle bucket idea. Maybe in an emergency, i think it would sink.

I use one in a river a lot when anchoring and wind is swinging boat, drift sock on the back let’s the current keep it straight
