Heading down to the Upper Owens River next week. This will be my boys first time fishing creeks and rivers. Does anyone know what the fish are hitting on. We will primarily be using ultra lightweight casting rods. Trout magnets, Meps Spinners, Joe’s flys?
When I was younger fished the trukee river. A gold panther martain with a red salmon egg on one of the hooks did the trick. Worth a try. Good luck to you and the boys
Have fished 395 from Topaz to Bishop for 45 years. To many good places to fish to name but the Upper Owens can be great. I have always liked the Benton Crossing area above Crowley. The Regulation are strict and change sometimes even during the same season. Most of that area is now single barbless hook with artificial only and there are size restrictions and C&R only stretches of the river. Be sure to check latest online Regs prior to fishing. Fish and Game officers are very unforgiving. Having said all that, the Owens can be very rewarding. I've used Sierra Slammers because the are unscented and had success. Trout Magnets will work but be sure to flatten the barb. Good luck!
Thanks for the great info Dandad! We will be camping at the Browns Owens River campground. If I’m reading maps correctly, Benton Crossing is right there. I thought that I read that there are no regs from the Benton Bridge south to Crowley. But, per your suggestion, I will definitely check again.
