In the water. But really I have not heard of a snare crab? Sounds like a crab trap of some kind. We mostly use crab rings, or pots of various sizes. In august you can crab in the sound behind vashon island out of manchester wa. 30 to 50 ft . Ricky Sitka
My friend did well near Anacortes last weekend

Loc: Vancouver, Washington state.
I have 5 crab rings and the line, floats, flags, bait boxes, and poles. $165.00 each reg. price. But willing to part with them all for just $500. 3 have never been used. 2 have been use maybe 3 times but are just fine. Now is the time to get ready before the September crabbing season starts.
Hell of a deal, Bobby1. Wish I lived closer to the coast or at least, went more often.
For the "snare crab (sic)" query......
I believe Orlando was referring to a castable crab snare. They come in two varieties.
One type is a small bait box with about 4 slip nooses out of what looks like the heaviest weed-eater line known...... supposed to entangle the crab's leg when you reel in......yeah, right...my buddy had one and lost more on the reel in, than he ever retrieved successfully.
The better choice is a collapsible type that has a giant safety pin to peg your bait and the two halves are lightly spring-loaded that allows it to lay out flat after landing on bottom, but fold and enclose when retrieved. Various sizes, depends on your rod/reel/line combo's ability. Mine is about 12"-14" sq. when folded, so, a couple of square feet, once on the bottom.
I use my collapsible crab-snare with a stiff 6'6"rod, 80lb Dacron or 60lb braid, & an old 5000(?) spinning reel.....works. Chicken legs or thighs are perfect bait. Cheap way to crab, and just amazing the interesting folks you might meet & chat with, on the pier while "soaking your rig" and enjoying a cold brew.... good way to spend an evening and watch the sunset over the Pacific, for sure.
PS...a collapsible snare is only about $15-$20, & $3-$4 worth of chicken could garner several crab meals, on occasion(catching "luck" of proper size is, of course, subjective to the water conditions, tide, weather, etc). Gotta love cheap gear AND cheaply acquired quality Dungeness seafood !
Thank you for very good information.
