Do not try to use a large hook and a hunk of bait. Try about about a #6 circle hook and bait the size of the tip of your little finger. Guess you are using a carolina rig, do not know, anyway, this will see if the fish are out there for you. Sometimes, not often, smaller is better.

Visit with the guys at Riptide bait and tackle in Brigantine and they’ll steer you right. Right now fluke ( summer flounder) is the hot bite. There are also bluefish around and some small striper and (North American)
Kingfish. Around jetties and other structures people have caught sheepshead. For fluke you want a “high low “ bucktails on the bottom tipped with pink gulp alive grub or swimming mullet , about 12 inches above that on a dropper loop you want a teaser of gulp alive on a Gamakatsu bait keeper hook. Try different colors of gulp. Pink has been working lately. Cast out and jig the bait while retrieving. Early morning and sunset has been best but they’re around all day.For blues topwater plugs poppers and some metal lures work also if you want to bait and wait try soaking bunker chunks on a circle hook high low rig or fish finder rig . On the bay side there is fluke, weakfish, blues , striper, blowfish. It’s a great time to be fishing. There are some very nice head boats doing fluke trips in the bay out of brigantine. I’ll try to remember the name of one in particular that I used last year and post that if I can.

Definitely use a fish finder rig with appropriate weight sinker to hold the bottom. MR ILOVESICLAIR has given excellent advice about hook and bait size. If using more than one rod, throw different distances and sit back and relax.

When surf fishing a lot of guys sit and wait in one spot and that can be productive…. or not. You can increase your odds by moving a lot. Unless your catching, if so, stay put until you’re not catching any more. When using bait ( bunker or clam ) change it often fresh bait works better. The name of that head boat I mentioned earlier is Fish Finder 2. Very reasonable prices senior and children’s rates, rod rental $5. Bait included regardless if you rent rod or bring your own.

The headboat sounds like a winning idea, you can get a ton of local info from mates. I am from Georgia and I have not fished in NJ before, mine are just general tips. The best is like the guy said, ask the baitshops. good luck to you.

I use a pink gulp on top and strip of squid on bottom.

I will be in WWC/Cape May area in late August and want to take my 4 year old Granddaughter fishing. Prefer some ideas of where to go that are free or very inexpensive as I know she has a short attention span and will probably not want to stay for as long as it might take us to get there! Suggestions welcome!

This is s trial run, she has never fished before, and I don't know if she will like it or get bored quickly, so I am trying to limit the initial outlay for equipment, and the distance to walk from car to fishing spot, so I don't get too P.O.'d if she doesn't want to stay after 15 minutes.

I used to go fishing in the canal under the Parkway (Mile 1) bridge coming into Cape May (20 years ago!) and have no idea if I can park nearby. Also giving thought to the fishing pier above North Wildwood or the pier on the bay side (Sunset Lake) of WW Crest, if they allow fishing. I know they must have some flounder in there.

All I have now are a couple of light freshwater rods (think 1 step above a "Zebco"). Are they suitable?

What strength line and what kind of hooks or lures should I get? What else beside squid triangles will work?

Does the North Wildwood fishing pier rent equipment and sell bait if I need it?

Thanks for any suggestions

I’m not very familiar with the area. I’ve been there a few times but never fished there. The fact that you’ll be fishing with a four year old adds another factor to the equation. My only suggestion would be to talk with the folks at the local bait and tackle shops . You probably aren’t going to get much fishing in . Keep it as simple as possible. And don’t forget crabbing as another option, you can do both. Just being out there with her is the main thing anything else that happens is gravy.

My post beginning with “ I’m not very familiar with the area…. “ is for you jrkahn
One other suggestion you should have clicked on “ start a new topic” rather than entering your post in someone else’s existing thread about another topic. You’ll get better results that way. Good luck with your trip and Welcome to the stage.

If you an find a quiet place near an overpass. Throw some light line and small baits (mussels, clam bits) out to the pilings. There might be some action with small sea bass. Used to have lots of fun when I fished in New York and New Jersey.

Thanks! Newbies are always fun.

My wife grew up in WWC and we spent two weeks every summer with her parents when we were first married.
I used to go 4hr fishing on a party boat that sailed from the pier at the far end of their street and was run by a school mate of my Father-in-Law. The Captain was frequently his son, who went to school with my wife, and they would not let me pay for the trip, so I would go down early (6:30am) and help the crew ready the boat for the 8am trip. I would help untangle the rods and lines and set them by the rail, and on the way out, I would cut the squid for bait. The Captain said I was "a Master Baiter"

Another school chum of hers and I would also go fishing under the GSPkwy bridge coming into Cape May and drop a crab pot into the canal while we fished. I took my older daughter there a few times when she was 5 or 6 but I don't think her younger sister ever went with us.

Now when we go every summer, we have to get a large motel room, but only stay a week and there is little or no time to take the 4 year old Granddaughter fishing.
