Welcome to the Fishing Stage Forum, Portfisher! I've not been anywhere near there (wile floating) in over 40 years; but, SOMEBODY ought to be along shortly with some useful information.

Portfisher - the fam and I were just there this past week (we're from NoVa and visit a couple times a year). Are you new to the area? Daily fishing reports are available from several tackle shops on the island; our favorite is Capt. Steves on Maddox (ask for Tom or Jimmy). We were killing it with white saltwater Gulp grubs on 1 oz. jigheads when the tide rolled in off the fishing pier behind Sundial Books (6 flounder [4 keepers] in 30 min. the morning before Elsa made it too windy) and also under the 175 bridge on the other side of Queens Sound boat ramp. Then of course if you have a boat, Chincoteague Bay, esp. the channels of the aforementioned locations and around Wallops Island. We also surfcast off Assateague but for other species. It was way too windy last week on the beach and too much drift even with 5 oz. pyramid sinkers.

DCGravity, We recently purchased a seasonal place on Chincoteague Island. I am familiar with Capt. Steves and appreciate the information. I was using white (3") and also pink (5") gulp swimming mullet but only a 3/8oz. jig head. We were there last week but only managed 3 keepers for the week. I do have a 19' Center Console but need to get a bit more familiar with the water thee before venturing to far. Seems to be quite a bit of movement of sandbars year to year from what I have been told.

Very true regarding the sandbars, esp. in Tom's Cove, less so in the bay. Re flounder, I've been told the highest groupings are in or near the channels, which are pretty fixed, since they're ambush predators and snack on what swims or floats by in the tide.

Thanks Again for the information. What size Gulps were you throwing?

Portifisher - we were throwing the 6 in. grubs. I didn't mention in my earlier post that we were also throwing bucktail jigs with squid strips but with less success.

Throwing the big boys! Were the jigs with the grubs bare hook jigs or bucktails w/ grubs as well!
