There is a creek near my house, which has a sizable amount of rainbow trout. I've tried power bait and worms, but I haven't had much success. Any suggestions?

Thanks. I'm new to fishing, so I haven't used many different types of bait yet. I really appreciate you responding.

No problem. I haven't fished fresh water much since moving to FL 20 years ago, but I remember as a kid in Upstate NY my dad would tear up the creek trout with a plain ole gold and red Mepps. He had a bunch of them but that one was always his favorite. Not sure about Rainbows though, hopefully someone with more experience than me will chime in.

Small inline spinners or trout magnets bumped along the bottom usually works for me

Try some smaller bucktail jigs and smaller crankbaits too.

Rainbows are so dumb that they will usually hit anything, so, I'm thinking that they are seeing you and they will not hit anything if they do that. If you would see something that was 400 times bigger than you and only 30' away, you would loose your appetite too. I know I would. (MHO)

With grasshoppers in abudenance, try a size 6 hook with a hopper. Let it float down.

Try using a inline spinner called Joe’s Fly’s I’ve had great luck with them.Trout magnets and small rooster tails are good too. Sneak up to the water and stay in the shadows.

try gold Panther martins or pautzkes balls of fire. They work for me on the Kern river on mostly planted rainbows.

I see that I've made the same mistake a lot of others make by not telling where the area I was fishing, it's in California south and east of Bakersfield, above lake Esabella.

Fly is always best . But for hatchery fish , trout nuggets and mousetails work. Small spinners like Mepps or kastmaster work. 4 lb test flourcarbon on an ultra light rod. Trout are easily spooked. You need to be silent and blend in. Walk softly. Cast upstream and let it float down stream .
