Fishing alone is difficult

I'm a pint sized passionate female angler. This afternoon I was made to feel uneasy in one of the only places I feel comfortable fishing alone. I always tell someone where I'm going, just in case. This particular place is a side road just outside of town that almost no one fishes. Probably because of the trek to get down to the creek. I've only ever seen one older gentleman fly fishing there and we had a pleasant interaction.

So I'm sitting in my car getting organized when a pickup slowly pulls up alongside me then parks infront of me. This is rather unusual I thought, so I decided to stay in my car and see what unfolds.

He's just sitting in his truck smoking, he has glanced at me a few times. He then proceeds to get out and walk around back of his truck bed. Just standing there smoking. So at this point I decide I'm not going to fish my beloved slice of paradise. I waited a few minutes then started my car, pulled a u-turn to head in the opposite direction. I did not act hastily but I did watch him in my rearview mirror.

He headed back to the driver seat, started his vehicle and proceeded to follow me. Thankfully I know my region well, I drove in the direction where I knew there was a residental area. Pulled into a driveway and hoped he would keep on trucking. He did.

Now this leaves me rather upset and unsure how to feel about going back there alone. It's not easy being female in a predominantly Male driven sport. I've been laughed at, gawked at, hit on and treated like an idiot while fishing my local tributaries. At times it really puts me off of something I love to do.

If you have made it this far thank you for reading. If you have any tips or advice short of finding someone to fish with me, I would love to hear it. I enjoy spending time alone in nature as it's therapeutic to me.

I'm sorry that happened to you. Fishing is a lot of fun and the best spots always seem to be remote.

Sorry that a lot of the men in your area are shitty.

You could always snap pictures of a creeper and license plate too. Send a text or pretend to send a text. Most creeps don’t like to be called out or have their actions pointed out to others. I get it if you did not want to be confrontational, just offering an option. Good job keeping your self safe.

I'm so sorry! I hope you're able to get back out there safely. I'm so sad that people are like that.

Seems like this specific issue has less to do with fishing and more to do with being alone in remote areas and a predatory individual.

May I suggest you either :

- dont go to remote places alone, or

- carry self protection (pepper spray or concealed carry) and let people know when/where you're going and when you plan on getting back.

Both of these are good rules for everybody. sorry that happened

I am sorry for what happened to you, it should never have happened! Great instincts to remain in your car.

I would highly recommend you carry protection and maybe invest in an emergency gps beacon, especially in those remote areas. Whether it's a human or nature, it gives comfort to you and your loved ones. Even getting a nice attack dog would be good! You technically won't be alone, but they offer nothing but love.

Can you fish with somebody? There are meet up groups and social places to connect with people that have similar interest. Fishing is one of those sports that I think is best to be with somebody else not because of the occasional creeper but also because of an emergency. I used to fish alone but one time I fell into the ocean fishing and was lucky some random dude just happened to see me falling in and helped me get out.

That's awful :/ That kind of stuff is the last thing you should have to worry about when fishing, let alone in general. Personally I have a CCW and carry 95% of the time when heading to the river (Although i'm more concerned about wildlife than creepy dudes). I'm not sure where you're located or your personal feelings on that matter. The other thing i'd recommend is find a friend who enjoys fishing as much as you and tag along with them. Not only should it dissuade the weirdos, but fishing is just a lot of fun when you can share the excitement of a catch or conversation with a buddy. I wish there was some quick fix for the problem, but I'm not sure what to tell you. Don't let it kill your passion for the sport if you can avoid it :)

I too am a Solitaire Fisher woman , that has had all of the above happen to me. Yet I refuse to be a victim and intimidated ! I now turn on my phones GPS tracker and carry self protection. I have boldly taken photos of license plates. That actually makes a Big impression. Usually enough to act as a deterrent. Missouri is an open carry state. I used to conceal carry...Pepper spray at works on a non windy day at close range !!! I was fishing on a very secluded river levee when 2 guys in a boat pulled boldy up to the bank. This after a quiet discussion between them. They decided to leave quickly after I stood up, turning around , giving full view of a side arm at my side. I'd rather pay a ticket than be a body found discarded...please , please have a care with yourself and Don't look like an easy victim....

I too have had this same problem. And yes, it limits women's ability to fish those areas more remote.
I have a CCW and have found that when I make it obvious and visible most won't approach me.
But... I believe it's far more important to stay safe and try and find a friend, group or other to go with you. Better safe then sorry!
I wish you lived closer, we could go together!! 😄

I have two grown daughters one of which loved to fish and ride her horses in as remote areas as possible. her Great Dane, and later English Mastiff server as wonderful deterrents to the sort of thing you have experienced. In Florida it is lawful to open carry to, from, and while hunting or fishing unless otherwise poster. Go on facebook live before you get out of your vehicle. Talk about what your seeing. " Wow I don;t see anybody down here ever ____" let him know he has been seen by others, whether or not he really has

Hey strange3trails cant say that I've seen your user name so really don't know what state you are from. I read all of the above post and a lot of good suggestions and the biggest deterrent for any one would be to see a weapon holstered to your side. I myself keep a snake shooter on my hip and know one knows the wiser and a lot less mouthy boaters when my kayak disrupts their water skiing paths. If you are pro gun I would go for it if your state allows open carry. Add a sharp shooter patch to your vest and fish on my friend.

My son lives in St. Lewis, MO., while he is working, he carries a 45 on dash of his truck and a specially trained security dog in the seat beside him. He doesn't have any problems. Just saying.
