I am relatively new to fishing and everytime I go to use a crankbait or spinnerbait I have no clue what to be feeling for and have never felt a bite or anything over a few weeks. I know it could be bad luck but I just don't know what to feel for.

I don't use a spinnerbait much, but with crankbaits the fish pretty much hook themselves, I just lift the rod tip after they slam into it.

Crankbaits and spinnerbaits can be tricky to get down, but they are about as simple as it gets. You don't really get nibbles, if something wants it, then it hits it. Hard. The treble hook makes setting the hook as easy as it gets. If you haven't gotten a hit yet then I understand your frustrations. Learning to read the water and doing research on fish in the area will go a long way. Adjust your reel speed and keep at it. There's no better feeling than getting a big blow up on a top water. Also, idk where you live but it's summer, so fish will go to deeper water so adjust tackle accordingly

One other thing with crankbaits is getting used to what it feels like when you run it over a rock and keep going. I always worried about getting snagged, but square Bill's are designed to run over rocks.

You'll feel them hitting. Usually a thunk or just heavy weight. On a crankbait you want to do a light hookset or you'll tear the trebles from the fish. On a spinnerbait Heavy hookset is required.

If they hit your crank you will know. Just try to feel the steady vibration on each cast and you’ll definitely know when they hit. And they will. If you have been fishing for weeks with no luck, it’s either really bad luck or a bad body of water. Cranks are easy.

What's the body of water you're on like? Are you on a boat or the bank? Is there structure, like docks, tree limbs, cattails? Is the water clear or stained? What color lures are you throwing?

My best luck with cranks come when the crank is smacking some bottom every once in a while. If it hangs stop cranking and let it float up a bit then continue cranking. If its constantly in the bottom its just too deep a crank for the water, when its never hitting anything its less likely to get hit. Spinners i use for grass beds that are subsurface, and points, and more for locating hungry fish when i just cant figure out what they are doing. I have caught loads more fish on the cranks and have way more faith in them. If you are wearing out your arm throwing cranks and spinners with out success you gotta change it up. Go with a carolina rig, texas rig, or a drop shot and slow it down a bit. Also the fish move around based on more factors than can be listed right here. If you been wearing an area out with everything in your box in every type of retrieve you can conceive MOVE no matter how fishy it seems like it should be. None of these tips are 100%. This is a life time worth of exp speaking and i know really nothing lol. Good luck and tight lines!

Feeling a hit on a crank bait Is pretty simple the vibration will stop you will feel a weight load up on your line then It will go left or right, up or down. set the hook firmly when that happens. The spinner baits will just get slammed most of the time. There is an old rule for fishing If you not bumping into something, and getting hung up you're not fishing. Crank down till you feel your lure hit something then stop for a second or two to let the lure float free of the obstruction, be ready to get slammed as it floats up. When you don't feel a slam crank down again. The spinner bait keep cranking if you get a hit set the hook, trying to cross the fish's eyes. Don't get stuck on one place fish it good and move to the next place

I've been fishing for 50-plus years; have caught 'em
on 'crawlers, crawdads, crickets/grasshoppers, crankbaits (like Rebels, Rapalas, Rattletraps, etc.) !
I have yet to catch anything on a spinner or spoon; tried 'Booyah' types for bass, in-lines(mostly Roostertails) and spoons (like Dare-devils) for trout and bass - NEVER even got a strike - EVER ! Have tried different colors/sizes, fishing deep/shallow, slow and fast steady retrieves, stop-and-drop - nary a nibble or strike ! Am I doing something drastically wrong ? Should I continue trying with other styles like 'Mepps', 'Vibrax', and 'Panther-Martins', or just 'fergeddaboutit' ? Input, please !

Try buzz baits over submerged vegetation. with a spinner bait you have to be bumping it off of something. Most of My bites with spinners happen just as or right after it hits something. when there is a log or tree limbs I like to cast to the base end of that cover and retrieve toward the top slow enough to keep the bait bouncing of the limbs or fast enough to make a ripple at the surface of the water. Make them bump trees on both sides. Bump rocks bump weeds like Maiden cane. cat tails what ever is there bump it. As long as you've been fishing I know, you know that if your not fishing if your not getting hung up

Yep ! Lost my share of lures/terminal tackle on snags/structures, believe me; some of those lures were a little expensive to lose on my budget, so that I actually considered quit-ting ! Looking to try diffe-rent types that my current fishing buddy swears by, such as Mepps and Panther-Martin in different colors/sizes ! Also want to try some of the Vibrax-type
spinners with the 'chasers', such as rainbow and brown trout, yellow perch and minnows ! Have always heard/read that Daredevils were a killer lure, so will probably keep trying with them, but again with different colors/sizes ! I like the weedless models, but they seem a little harder to find ! I'm really not a quitter, and I do love to get out as often as possi-ble, so hoping some newer, different gear will make a difference ! Thanjs to all for the input and advice !

Oops ! Sorry ! I DO SO hate mis-types; I still sometimes miss things, even after doing a spell-check ! Just the result of big fingers/small phone keys, I guess ! THANKS !

I had some old wooden devil horses that Granddaddy used. I loved them, and I guess somebody needed them more than I did I went in to pay for gas and when I got back my box and two metal rods and reels were gone. My modern stuff was still there, They knew what to loos for. I loved those devil horses more than any thing else in the way of fishing that I ever had. They were plenty scared up from getting bit.
When I was just a little feller Granddaddy brought home ten bass he said he made nine case and caught ten fish, he got two on one cast. That was one of those devil horses, that had almost no paint left on it. We would cast them and let them sit until all the ripples cleared,(some times we would get a hit while letting it sit) Then twitch it hard enough to make the blades churn the water, watch for a hit, when the ripples clear out we would twitch it about three or four times good and hard and then buzz it to the boat be ready all the way to the boat. A Zara spook is another one I like to walk the dog over brush piles with it. Old stuff that works as good as it ever did.
