I have around 22 year old line and tried to cast and couldn't cast more than 8 feet. Could the line have lost its properties?

Well, it certainly sounds as if your line has gone bad. Why not strip off a dozen yards or so and see if it has rotted, or in come fashion gone bad? I am not a fly fisherman, so do not have a grasp on those type lines. When I was an active lure fisherman with either spinning or bait casting, I changed mu likes every season. Just Sayin...RJS

Would it help to clean it through a rag as you strip it off by hand? Could it have oxidation on it to prevent it from proper use? Is there a way to condition it while re-spooling? As you can tell, I am not a devoted fly fisherman.

The only other thing I could think of would be . If your line weight doesn't match your rod weight you will have the same problem, but bad line is for sure an issue after 22 years.

It will get all full of cracks if not conditioned or cleaned over the years... Strip it off the reel and clean it with a mild soap solution and dry it then rub it with a rag saturated with armor all then use a dry rag to wipe it again!! If it's cracked up toss it and buy new!! Make sure the weight of the line matches the rod!! The weight should be painted on the rod near the butt!! Hope this helps...Tight lines from Virginia!!
