Another crappie day

Just got back from the bosses dock (still didn’t finish boat refab). Caught 5 pretty nice crappies and while I was putting the next one on it flopped and I dropped the stringer into the lake. Feel so bad that those fish are going to waste but I guess the snappers will have an easy meal. Crappie bite completely shut down so I bass fished. Got only one but it was pretty nice.

Nice Bass BK, did you try dropping a spoon, or jig, or treble hook,and try to snag the stringer?

Fred, I was so pissed off at myself I couldn’t think. I did try probing with my net to no avail. I’ve never pulled such a dumb move and will keep your suggestion in mind shall it happen again, but certainly hope it doesn’t.

I did the same thing when I was 9 on a boat. I caught major crap from both my brother and dad. It still haunts me. Just be glad you are not nine and have to carry that memory for over 60 years. Just let it go. Stuff happens.

I was fishing for rainbows on Duck Lake in Washington from a public fishing dock. There is often river otters hanging around. I had two beautiful 5 pound fish, on a metal chain stringer with the snap hooks, sitting in the water with the other end of the chain attached to the mooring cleat on the dock. I had my back turned for a couple minutes and when I went to look at the stringer there was only 1/2 of a fish left. The tail end of one fish was chewed clean off. The other fish was completely gone. Funny thing is the snap hook was still snapped! How in the world did that wiley otter get the entire fish off of the stringer without unclipping the snap? I'll never understand that.

Reminds me of a time maybe 30 years ago while tent camping. We had caught some pretty nice bass, way too much for one dinner and decided we’d keep the rest alive on a stringer in the lake for some future eats. Lo and behold, a snapping turtle or several gobbled them up. Heads only left on the stringer.

Chefrgrw, those otters have some nice incisors that can clip the tissues, Pretty wild though.
