Did an over-nighter up in the Truckee/Tahoe area. Caught my now "normal" amount of trout. You see em. First photo is Martis Creek Lake, south of Truckee. I was using the rod in the bottom photo (my wife's) with 2 pound fluoro on a Nasci reel with a barbless 1/4 oz copper Johnson Silver Minnow and a root beer colored grub - a big one slammed it and I fought it for a bit, but it broke off. Made me feel like I might be back in the game at least. Martis Creek is home to some big browns and lahonton cutthroats. Strictly artificial/barbless, C&R for all trout. Saw them rising in the late morning. Saw one jump pretty far out, had to be at least a 2 footer - a great beast. Spectacular! The other lake is Webber, north of Truckee - the wind was howling Not a good time there. My first trip to either. I'll be going back to Martis Creek with my tube. Perfect small lake for that. + positively GREAT access for a tube or a kayak - but no boat ramp - no motors allowed. That's what the sign said - not sure if that includes electrics?

All this about an hour or so from my house.

Great report! That region looks spectacular...great that you live fairly close! Your story and sightings makes my adrenaline surge with anticipation! Sounds like you offered them something they cold not refuse so that is a good start!

Beautiful pictures Spirit, sorry you had a tear off but with 2# fluro and a big fish it’s inevitable. I too use 2# on my trout rod and it’s happened more than once.

73 years old, been fishing since I was a toddler, and I'm still learning. I normally use that set up in small streams with crystal clear water and if you catch a 12 inch trout it's enormous. Why'd I tie on that Silver Minnow? Seemed like a good idea at the time. Years ago I used those silver "spoons" to catch pike. I'd never tried one for trout, but I figured why not? Well that was a studly fish that took it, and now due to my choice of 2 pound line, he is swimming around with it hooked in his jaw. Maybe. It was barbless.

Spirit, I would say your choice of the Silver Minnow was the perfect Choice! The two # line maybe “not so much”, but it worked for a while.
I’d say ya whupped the 🦨!

Dang buddy. I wouldn't even try to fish with line less than 6# test. I use to fish for trout exclusively and always used 6# test mono and never found it to be too heavy of line for trout in the lake or river. If you're in the river you better have at least that or you are gonna have a hard time landin any size fish if they get in the current.

It feels that way ECarl! I had a great time fishin with Saw1 earlier this year and we caught some stripers, but just was not getting used to going out for trout and not even having a line twitch. That was a really nice strike today and was my own dumb fault for using that reel wound with 2 pound fluoro. Not like I don't have others.

Like I said, I usually only use that reel when I'm not expecting to catch anything bigger than about 8 or 10 inches. I posted a picture of a trout I caught up on the Stanislaus and it was caught with that reel and that line. Lots of little brookies in there too. I spent a day up there a few years ago and wore those little guys and girls out. Great fun. Live and learn, right? I shoulda known better. It'll be 12 or 15 when I return. And I will.

I’m glad you had a good time Spirit. Nice pictures, great story. I usually use four pound floro for trout. It’s usually sufficient, but I was fishing with my younger brother weekend before last and hooked a big trout that jumped out of the water twice and broke me off on the second one. I’m thinking I might move up to six.

I would brother. People say trout are line shy but when I'm fishin the rivers up in the Tahoe area I've always used 6# test mono and have never had trouble catchin fish .

Yep, it’s overkill until it isn’t.

Glad you got out Spirit. I use 6 8 or even heavier line for even trout. I get the spendy stuff that is 8 or larger but the good stuff is like 4 lb size from not too long ago anyway. Today’s line is much smaller than years ago anyway. I like Maxima Chameleon if it’s available in size I want. It stretches. You can feel it stretch when fighting fish. You usually feel it stop stretching and it’s time to not pull any harder because next thing that happens is it snaps.

Sounds like a good place for you to take float tube back.

Beautiful spot Spirit, you donated a Silver Minnow as a warning that you’ll be back and better equipped. Best of luck when you do. Looks like a great place for Mepps, Panther Martin’s or Blue Fox spinners with barbless hooks!
