Mornin'!
Recognizing that this is a fishing forum, I hope I am not out of line asking a question about my outboard...
I have a Honda 90 with a "flush port connector" that does not flush. When I hook a garden hose up to the connector, the water pressure blows the small rubber connecting hose off of the engine. I can't get any water from the garden hose into the engine using this method. The manual says it is the way to wash out the motor without having to run the engine.
It seems the flush system is blocked, but where to start looking?
BTW, I currently use "muffs" to wash out the motor, but would really like to have this other option.
Thanks in advance for any information you might have on this problem!
Tight Lines everyone!
Randy
Contact the Honda dealer, they can give you the best advice!

I would check where that hose connects to the motor itself and make sure it is not blocked there. then I would contact a dealer or get on YouTube and see if you can find some good information on there. Good luck man keep us posted what you find might help someone else down the road

My Honda dealer told me not to use cthe muffs said the water would cavitate and not cool correctly
Thanks Whitey!
I did as you suggested and found the flush valve, spring and cavity completely choked with salt and scale.
π In the process of trying to clean the ports and hoses now. It appears to be a very involved process. Might not get back to you for while.
I bought the boat used. It had been run in the ocean and it looks like it wasnβt washed out like it needed β¦
Thanks for your response and suggestions!
Thanks Ron!
I will be using these!
Thanks Justoldjim!
I fish primarily in fresh water but
I run in salt water once a year for about a month (salmon fishing). Rinsing the engine so the thermostats open and everything gets flushed is the big concern about only using the cold water flush port connector when Iβm at the coast.
Muffs have been my βgo toβ so far.
Any suggestions about cleaning out the salt water?
Thanks again.
Randy

Hi Randy, when I used to run my outboards in the salt, I used to flush them out with Hot water at the end of the season. If you have a washing machine you have a hot water hookup. Salt dissolves quicker in hot than cold water. Good luck.

Update on the motor:
Found a great video on cooling system repair and maintenance. Gave me confidence to dig in. Great video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Wr18cuyq2M&t=51sI was able to check small connector hoses and found on completely plugged. Used the video suggestion of using an old guitar string to ream out the small port and then used my compressor to blow out the rest. It opened up the water flow!
I hooked up the hose to the flush port connector, and for the first time it actually started working. I let it run for 2 hours. Hope it will continue to improve the water flow and I can keep the salt out of the small ports!
Thanks for the suggestions - it lead to the solution!

Fred fish,
Thanks for the hot water truck. Makes since I will be using it in the future.
Have you tried opening the picket only a little you may have too much water pressure, just a thought

You're welcome Ricky. Bought my 25hp Merc new in 1990,and ran it in saltwater only for 11yrs. I'm still using it now in freshwater, and its never been apart, except to change the impeller every few years. No corrosion anywhere.
