Braid and setup options?

Been wanting to switch from mono to braid and I have a couple of questions for you seasoned fisherpeople out there. Can I tie a snap swivel to the end of the braid, so I can easily change my setup? How critical is the fluoro lead, and will snelled hooks on mono be okay? I like to use these, but I want to be able to swap them out for lures etc. Using ML ugly stik with Shimano Sienna 2500, fishing ponds for bass. Any advice and suggestions are greatly appreciated, thank you!

Betts, for what it is worth, I always use fc connected to braid with a very small swivel, not a snap swivel, if I'm fishing with a spinning reel. If I'm fishing with a bait cast reel, I do not use a swivel, I'll tie it with a uni-knot.

Betts i can answer a few, yes you can tie a snap to braid i would use the Palomar knot for that. The fluro lead i find very beneficial because it is nearly invisible in the water. So a 2' - 3' lead is what i use.

I know that using a snap is for your benefit in changing lures, but just remember the more hardware you add on the line the more chance for something to snap. I lean more to a longer fluro and a perfection loop knot for the lures.

I like to tie in about 3 or 4 feet of fluorocarbon to the braid using an FG or an Albright. When you cast the leader is more resistant to abrasion at the rod tip as well as making your terminal ger less visible. I can use a snap or knot to tie on.

Hi Betts
I like to use braid because it casts a country mile, it doesn’t get “line memory “ so it rarely gets tangled, strong but a smaller diameter than mono. Another benefit to using a flourocarbon leader with braid is if your fishing in a little deeper water and get snagged, you can break the flouro part of your line and not lose any braid. The rod will break before the braid will break. I use Powerpro brand (just my choice) I normally use 20 or 30lb test which has the diameter of 6 or 8lb diameter mono. I do attach a fluorocarbon leader, normally no more than 14lb test. I personally like BassPro XPS brand. I tie the two together using the Crazy Alberto knot. It is a very simple knot to tie that moves easily through your rod guides so I can tie in about 12 feet at a time and just whittle away at it re-tying often. Fluorocarbon has the advantage of sinking fast and being invisible which in my opinion will give you more fish a bitin’. You certainly can attach a snap swivel if you desire. Get a sharp pair of scissors. Never use your teeth. I saw a friend crack a tooth on flouro once.

I use 20lb power pro also. I catch lots of catfish tying the hook to the power pro, and using a clip on bobber. But I use flouro leader for everything else. I have used clip on swivels all my life and never remember a clasp coming unhooked or breaking.

My $.02, if you are uncomfortable with line to line knots, tie a small swivel to the braid using a Palomar knot, then tie a 2’ fluoro or mono leader between your swivel and your clip. This will help with line shy fish. Your clip will affect the action of the lures, but some sacrifices have to be made. This will also help to reduce line twists. Reel the first swivel only up to the rod tip, not through the guide. I hope this helps and good luck!

Tie on a Duo Lock snap available from DO-It Molds or most shops , they are VERY strong and won't give out on you !

I say give it a try and see what you think. If you like to use smelled, learn to snell your own, that way you can make the leader as long as you want and use whatever pound test you feel comfortable with. Make em up ahead of time. That's what I do because me eyes are not good and it's way easier to change things up when I'm actually fishing.

1. Carolina Rig;

How To Carolina Rig;

The most basic and easiest way to fish offshore is the venerable Carolina Rig.

It’s essentially a slip sinker rig, which allows you to present a plastic on the bottom.

The Carolina rig allows anglers to cover water efficiently, and bass don’t feel the weight when they strike.

To rig, slide on an egg sinker, tie on a swivel, then attach a 12-36 inch piece of line, and tie on the hook.

Thread on your favorite Craw, Worm, or Creature Bait, and slowly drag it around offshore cover like humps, rock bars, and points.

Once you get a bite, give it a little slack, and then set the hook hard.

Drop Shot;

Drop Shot Leader Length;

In clear water, or when the bite is tough, there’s nothing better for targeting deep bass than a drop shot.

With the weight on the bottom, the bait is free to wiggle and dance in an enticing manner not possible with a big heavy weight.

Ideal drop shot baits include finesse worms, little creatures, and even swimbaits.

Drop shots are ideal for probing specific deep water cover, like brush piles, rock bars, and any other deep structure like bridge pilings or road beds.

The Best Dropshot Trick For Fall Bass!🎣🐠

Are you ready to try something different to catch more bass this Fall?

Are you tired of the same old dropshot worm? Its time to discover a new way to fish a finesse swimbait! Dropshotting small swimbaits is a deadly trick for

Fall bass that are feeding on baitfish. If you aren't doing it this Fall, you're missing fish that are ready to be caught.

Tim turns to a non-traditional dropshot rig for Fall bass.

Not only does he use a swimbait instead of a worm, he also prefers to tie his tungsten dropshot weights to the line instead of using a standard dropshot weight.

He explains that smallmouth and spotted bass will often throw traditional dropshot weights off the line during the fight but a tied weight will last much longer.

This video is full of small details that make a huge difference so pay close attention to what Tim is teaching.

While the actual method is simple, Tim breaks down “3 key applications” for the dropshotted swimbait.

He also explains there are two different hooks that work for this technique.

The Owner mosquito light is best with higher-end tackle that has been dialed in to absorb the hard runs of big bass.

This hook is incredibly sharp but will bend under load if the angler is not experienced with battling big bass.

For those with budget tackle that is not as dialed in, or those who simply prefer a heavier wire hook, the Trokar dropshot hook is a phenomenal option.

Below is a breakdown of the baits, hooks, weights, and equipment that Tim recommends for this method.

So much helpful advice!! Thank you, everyone. Going to go study up on the knots, put the leader on the line and tie a snap swivel to the end of the lead. You all are the best. 😁😁😁

I actually use my fly tying vise to do snell tiny little #6 circle hooks I use for bluegills and perch.
