Hey all. I purchased some new line today, 10 lb mono for my spinning reel. I put it on correctly (at least how flukemaster on YouTube demonstrated), but on the first few casts, I got a bunch of tangling. I've also noticed that when I reel it in, it's really loose on the spool. Is the line bad? Or is it my reel?

I'd have to guess. When I was young to put new line on a reel, before we'd use it, we'd get as much as we could in the water. If we were out on a boat, going out we'd play out all the line with a small weight on it. Seems getting it wet would make it lay down on the reel better. Then when first putting it on I always grab the line in front of the reel and put tension on it. One more thing about spinning reels, I've never put that heavy of line on one. Mono line cans be pretty stiff. That doesn't help it lay down on the reel any.

The line is not bad.
There simply not enough weight presure on the line. Try this to demonstrate, put a heavy sinker like a 4oz. on and reel it back.
If you still have the problem you might have to go to a lighter rod so the bend of the rods energy applies tension.

Put the line back on the spool that you bought it on and take it to a tackle shop and have them put it on,there machine will put it on with the proper tension!

Let the line out behind the boat with (NO ) weight and drag it for a short spell. when you reel it back in the water drag will put the correct pressure on the line and also take out any twists that may be your problem .

Do what all others suggested and I would also recommend a spray for your line called “real magic”. Don’t know why they didn’t cal it “reel magic” but nonetheless the stuff works. I spray it on monofilament or fluorocarbon once the line is spooled the night before and let it soak in.

Oh, and additionally make sure you use quality line in mono such as Trilene XL. Good line makes all the difference in the world!

It probably was put on incorrectly even though you thought you did put it on correctly. To solve the problem be in a boat with your line let all the line out approximately 100 yards and then reel it back in and that will take all the tangles out

when you are spooling up new line do not put a screwdriver thru the package spool and crank it onto your reel. Doing so means you are doing a 90 degree turn from spool to reel. Lay the new spool on the ground and wind it onto your reel. That way you are moving and matching the line "face to face" so to speak. Spinning reels will twist the line after use. Use the line out the boat method mentioned herein but do it at cruising speed for a few minutes with nothing on the end of line.

I am lucky and have enough property to tie a chain swivel to a tree and the line to it. I then run the line out and stretch it a bit and hold so that any twists can work their way out. I then rewind under tension. Again, good line makes all the difference. I also go with XL

Ya know I been thinking. Wonder how it would work to put the spool of new line in a bucket of water and load your reel? Gonna try that one of these days.

I use briad it doesn't have memory, I use a uni knot to tie momo on the last ten feet.
For me I can put more line on because it's smaller and stronger. Never will I go back to mono.
