Went fishing today for the first time in years (5-10) and caught one fish. The line has not been changed since. I can break the line with a decent amount of force. Definitely takes some doing, but isn't super difficult either. Just fishing from banks primarily looking for bass. Just wondering if I should change the line or what. Not looking to spend too much money/time on fishing just want to be able to go whenever and spooling a reel looks relatively difficult, although I am sure I could do it. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks!

You need new line. It isn’t difficult just youtube for the type of reel you have. Take your time. Baitcasters and spinning reals load differently. Fighting equipment failure isn’t part of fishing. Being prepared is.

5 years glass? If it’s mono I’d definitely repspool.

I suspect your line had begun to deterioated some over these many years. It would be wise to change it, most tackle shops will load any line of your cholce if you wish. They usually only charge for the line. Just Sayin...RJS

Nothing bugs me more than not having confidence in any piece of fishing equipment I own. From boat to rods and reels , lures , line , hooks. Everything
If I’m not 100% confident in a piece of gear, it don’t go with me.

Change out the line with the line of your choice.
While your at it , give the reel a good cleaning and relube.
Follow your reel manufacturers instructions. Pretty easy job

Line will go bad. I start every season with new line.

Most sporting good stores will empty your reel andRe spool it for the price of the line. Re spool.

I would change it out probably little dry rot. It’s not hard most important I think is to make sure you spin the line from the new spool. I get someone to help put a pencil thru the new spool line have them put a little tension on the line as I reel it on.

I think that method is for baitcasters only. Of Course, I’ll get corrected quickly if I’m wrong.

Spinning reel: Spool flat in the floor. If it starts to show any signs of twisting up flip the spool over and continue. Add tension with your hand if front of the reel.

Well I fish with 5 different spinning reels only have 1 bait caster it sits the most . if you get your line on and it doesn’t tangle up when you cast it it is all good. There are as many ways to spool your line as knots to tie just have to find what works for you. I am not saying any way is wrong it’s all personal preference
