Benefits of Fishing!!

Eight years ago I went to Alaska to visit my daughter in Kenai, Alaska. My son in law took me sockeye salmon fishing. I have been hooked on it ever since. The salmon were like nothing else I had ever fished for. The "Tug is the drug" to me and after a few hours of fishing I was at the local tackle store buying all the gear I needed. I just love it. Been every year since.

To me the fishing itself is over the top. But what I have learned and come to love the most is the "Culture" that surrounds the fishing. I have come to know several fellow fisherman and woman that I now consider some of the best friends I have ever had in my 63 years. Since you wade for sockeyes your in close proximity of each other and and its a big help when trying to land a hard fighting fish in the fast moving water. Most everyone that comes down to the river is great. If there is a butthead they get weeded out very fast.

Catching salmon used to be my main goal when I went to the river and to some degree still is. But the interaction with fellow fisherman is most satisfying and fun. I love all the topics from grand kids to politics. If I forget something or need some tackle all I need to do is ask.

Catching fish is some of the most fun you can have. But being with other great fisherman can be the best part. The best part of the "Culture" on the river is all the giving that is done. I've learned so much.

What a great experience that must be. My brother was stationed in Alaska in the 70s and almost stayed after he got out. The more I hear and learn about the state the more I understand his love of the place.

Great story, thanks for sharing.
My Son had a similar experience as he was doing one of his Pharmacy rotations in Anchorage. He called me on his first day there and complained that salmon was $18 per pound! I told him to buy a fishing license...he did, and would take advantage of the long days by fishing until 10:00 every night. The locals let him know what he needed as I had sent him with a pair of waders and he was set. What a way to spend the last year of college before the “real world” set in.

That "hot spot" looks familiar, mb. I have fished the Kenia many times and I love it. Thanks for sharing.

That’s a great story MB. Thanks for sharing. You are right. When I go fishing I may not catch many fish. But when I’m with friends..... that’s what it’s really all about. I went fishing with a couple buddies yesterday, we didn’t catch a thing but had a great time!

Yeah in the Belly of a Hungry Grizzly.

I was in Alaska many years ago. We targeted Reds ( Sockeye ) in the Russian near a cable tram that took us across the river to fish. It was a blast for sure. I would love to go back.
