Beginner fishing with spouse

I'm going to start fishing regularly in the ponds and lakes around my home (bass, trout and cats) in San Antonio. My question is, are the rods/reel combos at academy/walmart any good for this kind of fishing? I'm teaching my wife how to cast and I myself haven't fished regularly since I was a kid, so very little experience here.

Just trying to blow off steam and have some fun outside of the house. I'm searching for affordability with reasonable durability.

cant go wrong with one of the inexpensive yet worthy spincast outfits. Grab a small tackle box with an assortment of baits/lures, line.....good luck!
