Hi all, a couple weeks ago I asked about Jitterbug lures which I never used. I got some helpful info. Fred posted a picture of his but they have a skirt. I just ordered two Jitterbugs from Amazon but none offered had skirts. How do you all feel? Is a skirt an advantage or doesn't matter? How do you get a skirt on a treble hook?
Does a Jitterbug work in mild waves?
Thanks, Ed

Only the weedless ones have a skirt. They have a little protruding prong for the skirt, like a hula popper.

Most top water baits aren't designed to work in waves. A slight ripple might be OK, but as soon as you get waves, you loose the ripple effect/water disturbance you are tryin to produce with top water lures.

Calm is best but a little ripple action and you will be good to go.
That jitter bug is an old school slayer. It’s why they still make em after all tjis time.

Early morning, or between dinner and sunset. Usually the breeze dies down. The flatter the water the better, a small ripple is ok, but flat is best. Cast one out near weed edges, or a blowdown, or near reeds. Let it sit till the rings dissipate. Give it a couple, three cranks, and stop again and wait for the ripples to dissipate again. Repeat until it reaches you,or you have a blowup! Take any heart medication before going out LOL. Good luck

LOL It's an awesome sight when a bass hits one of those plugs.

I would think a skirt would kill the action somewhat !

The action of the jitterbug is what causes strikes, not the skirt. It does not work well in big waves. I usually use it early in the morning or at dusk when the winds are not blowing much.

I've been using jitter bugs since I was a kid (will be 70 this year) and I don't remember ever having one with a skirt, hula popper yes. Good luck

Hey m64, I have been pretty sussessful even with a slight ripple with most top water lures but will say I have done better with pop-r's and tiny Torpedo's verses a jitterbug in those conditions. I cleaned out an old tackle box I found , this past weekend and found this brand new jitterbug and this fine looking hula-popper. The skirt was shot on the hula-popper so I took it off and will replace it with a new one when I get to my bait shop. I don't believe either of the lures were ever used. Looking forward to some soft water to try them both, just have to get rid of this 10 inches of ice and yes it is melting as we are at 51° as I am typing. Maybe soon, fingers crossed.

DH, The only Jitterbugs that had a skirt are the Weedless ones. They don't have treble hooks, but have 2up facing fixed hooks . The skirt rides between the hooks, and disguises them, so the fish don't see them.
