Ok so in my introduction I mentioned that I'm a newbie to ice fishing, how far away should I respectfully set up my 5×5 tent shelter from those enormous ice castles? I was almost lynched yesterday by some locals for setting up near the whole line up of them.

I'm not an icefishermen, Inkslinger, but I suppose it would depend on the size of the lake. In general I would think 10 or 20yards would be plenty of distance, no?

Did you return the favor? You just described what Webster’s recognizes as a bodily orifice from the lower back region of a human being.

Well, when I'm fishin in OPEN water I don't like it when people get any closer than castin distance at least.
That's bout 30 to 40 yards min. preferable even further if both of us are castin towards each other sometimes.
Then that puts it no closer than 80 to 100 yards apart.
HOWEVER, when ice fishin, you aren't castin so I would think 20 yards should be enough most of the time.
Suppose it might also depend on the size of the lake you're on.
I don't ice fish very often and when I did quiet often we were the only people out there.
That was back when I lived in Tahoe year round.

Take an ax or chainsaw with you next time. If the guy says anything to you just start chopping or cutting a trench around his "ice castle".

OR you could have gone over to them and said," I'm sorry I didn't realize that I was too close. I'm new here. How far apart is standard around here?"
Sometimes when you confront somebodies rudeness with kindness it changes their opinion/outlook. IDK.
Course, they could have been drinkin and been real Aholes and said, "Oh, bout a mile."

See, that's what I was sayin. You're just gonna find some people like that no matter what.
In that case, I probly would have packed up and moved further away. I don't like bein around that type of person anyway.
