He's not quite dead, I did catch a fish today, but it was not a trout and since I consider myself a trout fisherman, that stripedy bastardo will not be pronounced officially dead until I do catch one. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. I set out in pursuit of trout and failed at my mission. BUT. It was a perfect day - low 60's, no wind, kinda cloudy and I had an entire beautiful riverfront park practically all to myself. Said to myself "can this be California"?

So here's a pic of what I caught. I used the jar of power bait for a size reference. Dang these guys can fight. I didn't take a pole holder down to the water, so i's just sittin there with the butt of my rod shoved down my boot to hold, and this guy about jerked the rod into the water.

I know the catfish hunter will recognize this, anyone else? My grand daughter Lorelei caught one about twice this size last spring on the Feather.

And this one had been eating well, definitely chunky for the size of it.

We call them squawfish out here. Some people call them pike minnows.
Good goin. At least you got to feel the pull of a fish. Congrats brother. Now maybe you can duplicate it again and again. JUST WITH DIFFERENT SPECIES. Lol.

Yes! Well this is a whole new chapter in my fishing life, which is kinda cool really. Before my back started acting up I used to hike and traipse all over this vicinity and up in the Sierras. A couple of years ago I'd have been walking out there in that water. I just don't feel safe doing that kinda stuff any more, so I gotta figure out how to be successful from a more stationary position. I have a pontoon now with a trolling motor on it and as soon as it's registered it's gonna be out on that river. I know from first hand experience that there are some nice rainbows and browns in that stretch, but sitting on the bank in a folding chair makes the challenge even greater. I also know from personal experience that it's difficult to read current in a "flat" run like that. My dumb luck I'll get out there in the pontoon and get swept down the canyon. Might be fun.

Well be careful brother. Things can go south in a hurry sometimes. Specially at our age.

Congrats Spirit, on the beginning of the end of the skunks reign! The longest journey begins with the first step.

That's a perfectly fine name for them in my opinion Steve. But NOOOOO. We had to change the name to pike minnow so as not to offend anyone's tender sensibilities. I've done a little looking into this topic in particular, and can anyone out there please tell me how or why the word squaw is offensive? Mrs Spirit tells me that it is a Native American term for the female pudendum. (here I come attic). I guess kinda like calling your boss a c**t. But she can't back that up with any evidence. Which aboriginals and which language? Anyone?
Now I'm really not looking to get put in the attic, so let's not talk about whether it's right or wrong to go renaming fish for those reasons, but in my opinion if you're gonna do that ( I'm ok with it ) you should be able to back up your argument with little proof. My opinion.

Congratulations Spirit. I don’t consider a skunk a species specific rodent. You caught a fish that can’t be used as bait in the water you are fishing. By my definition the skunk is dead. Go forth with confidence and catch all the trout you want and they best be cautious a fisherman is in the area.

Yes is is, the South Fork, just west of Coloma. Nice little park there, right off the road. I guess the folks who live there don't realize what a little gem they have right in their side yard. Wasn't hardly a soul there.
