I'm guessing she has a hybrid, as the anal fin and tail are black, unlike the Pork fish. also the dorsal fin goes all the way to the top of the gill plate, more like a grunt. I'm gonna ask Greg Skomal a DOF biologist

You got a point there on the black on the tail and anal fin. Let us know your findings.

Gordon, now I'm the morron. You are soooo right about the stripes. Thx, I stand corrected.

So what’s the verdict? What kind of fish is it?

Greg says it's probably a local variant of a grunt. while the gill stripe is there, the fin configuration makes it a grunt. did they "grunt" when you took them out of the water?

No grunts just moans. Oh wait you were talking about the fish. No noise from the fish just really pretty and lot of them. I think the biggest one I caught was 14”

Pork Fish. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. See the black stripe across the eyes and behind the pectoral fins. The same thing on yours

Sorry Gordon, Greg says coloring can vary by region that's why there is more than one way to identify a specific fish. You seem to be relying on only the stripes for an ID. the fin configuration Pects, dorsal, and tail all put it in the grunt genus. KG's fish has a distinctly forked tail (Grunt)
