Hello all, I was curious if the tactic of "poke poleing" was legal in oregon? I have googled and can find nothing about it be illegal and really the only google hit was a post from 2009 about someone asking if any locals did it. Thanks for your time

I watched the video, I now know what "poke poling" is,...& I live in Oregon.....WTH ??

Are ya' just a dead-broke and totally bored fellow ? (or maybe you just blew your budget all to heck buying a license, idk)

I might have concocted something like that when on a Boy Scout survival campout, but I have no idea what would entice someone (like an adult) to take up this "technique" as any kind of regular fishing method. Hell, if you're in Oregon, and that desparately desiring to fish, but can't afford to buy any gear, at all... PM me. I live in Medford, come visit, I'll GIVE YOU A ROD !

In answer to your question...no, it's not going to be "illegal", per say, but, I have to deem it "illogical".
And most likely, in any circumstance that I know of, not very effective and definitely "hokey" ! I would think that it might be effective in catching crawdads, using a piece of chicken or a fish head, but little else.
I'm pretty sure that if you choose to use this method, I would steer clear of any other fisherpersons, for no other reason than ridicule.... it's gonna come, you can count on that, sorry. Any hint of "duct tape technology" just screams "I haven't a clue about what I am doing".
But then, at least you got out of the house for a while, so that's a good start.
Coat hanger and duct tape....jeez, I keep thinking I have seen most everything fishing-technique-wise, but Oregon, despite some opinions expressed by some on this forum (lol), ain't a Third World country when it comes to fishing gear, might actually only lag behind one or two, maybe three, of the 50 !
Poor man's Tenkara, so poor, in fact.... could only afford a short length of line !
LMFAO, sorry...can't help myself !

Poke poling is snagging. Therefore illegal in Oregon except in the ocean.

Hey guys, I've never poke poled, buy I know what it is and it isn't snagging.
The pole you have the coat hanger on is for sticking down in holes and crevices on the rocky shore.
You have a short piece of HEAVY fishin line with a hook and bait attached to the coat hanger.
You walk along the rocks and poke your bait down in places where fish, like Lingcod, might be up under the rocks.
You don't want to use a fishin rod because it would get destroyed very quickly raking up and down on the rocks.
A guy I use to know use to go all the time here before he moved and wanted me to go with him but I never was able to. He use to catch some monster fish that just lived up under the rocks. When you got the bait down by the entrance of their hole they would grab the bait , but stay up under the rock and you had to wrestle the fish out of their hole.
I still would like to try it sometime with somebody that knew where to go and was experienced.

As long as you are using bait on the hook, I don't think it would be illegal in Oregon. "Snagging" is going to be illegal, but it is sometimes called "flossing" here, since the practioners could not care less about "enticing the bite", but rather, wait for a salmon to swim past and snag its teeth, resulting in a hookset on the outside, a sure sign of "flossing".

Back to the "poke pole".....
I guess that some may find that...??......idk.."effective" ? Efficient ? K.I.S.S. approach ?

Pretty "Third World" primitive, imo.
Don't think I will be considering a coat hanger and duct tape as part of my "fishing arsenal". Although, I do have a roll of Gorilla Tape in each vehicle and used to carry a coat hanger to get into "keys locked inside" cars, but that isn't very effective on any vehicle built in this century. And just like so many things we used to take for granted that would always be available... no wire hangers, unless you have a stash or find a few in the back of a little-used closet... but then, never bought rubber bands because there was another on this evening's newspaper, but somehow, I NEVER get one with my digital subscription...darn it ! Could have used one to hold the hanger in place, while I was wrapping duct tape around the pole...lol.
Funny technique there......that I happily bequeath my rights to use, to whomever thinks that might be the way to go get dinner.

If you google it and watch some/1 of the videos, I think it looks like fun. You can also see that it definitely isn't "snagging".

Kind of a "timid man's, didn't want to get wet" noodling, I'd say.
If I were to take up the practice, I'd be inclined to call it "Hanger-hooking with a broomstick"..lol.

I watched a couple of old experienced anglers use this technique off the California coast for eels and then caught a bunch and a few bottom fish.

The question was “is poke poling legal in Oregon?” My reply was directly related to the question. Because you looked it up on the internet does not mean it’s legal in Oregon. My reply was a direct repeat of a comment I received from a local ODFW (Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife) law enforcement officer. I know him personally so I asked for the answer. What I posted was words straight out of his mouth. Maybe he’s was wrong but you need to research fish and game laws for a specific state. Oregon has its own laws just like any other state. Check before you go. When you apply a hook to a broom stick and put it where you thing a fish might be the possibility of snagging that fish is highly possible. Oregon does not give a person many options of saying they were doing something legal if it’s possible they weren’t. It was a specific answer to a specific question. Oregon “law” don’t even apply in Oregon. The officers can design laws as they want there and they will stick. It’s a very unusual state, maybe not compared to yours but compared to many, and I have personal experience there. If your “artificial” lure or bait don’t look “artificial” enough they can bust you for it there and they will. That’s why I fish with a Washington license on the Columbia River. I did that even when I lived there for over 20 years. I know what I know from being there, experiencing it and knowing some of the wardens there. Entering a gray area in Oregon will get you citation very quickly. They drill you on your knowledge of the laws there. If you are not well educated you’re an easy source of revenue in Oregon. Have you met their governor? There’s a big reason most of the native people of Oregon want out of there and I know lots of em. It’s not Oregon any more. It’s over run by California invaders with California ideals. That’s not what Oregon was when I moved there in 1998. Whole different state now.

Google don’t always tell you the laws of each state. Call the officials of a specific state and find out for sure before you go. That’s what I’d did on this one. It’s not a legal activity in Oregon except on the coast. Rules are different for the ocean in most cases. Plus God has created some species to survive. It’s not all about just slaying tons of fish and bragging about it. Figuring out how to entice those reclusive fish and animals out of their natural protective lifestyles just to say you can kill em and show everybody. Sorry I have a different opinion about catching tons of fish just to say I did or killing an animal every time I go hunting. I was taught, by my grampa, as a very young child that it’s up to us to conserve nature and the fish and game. If they don’t win 70% of the time we’ll wipe em out. There are plenty of people who catch way more fish than they can eat and harvest way more animals than they can use use. I’m a fisherman not a catcherman. I catch my share but it’s nowhere near what a lot of people do and I’m proud of that. I don’t need to post a pile of fish to show everyone I can catch fish. I have what I can eat in my freezer and nothing more. Not many people can eat 10 or 12 fish 4 times a week year round. Some people I’ve met will even go harvest lots of fish and they don’t even like to eat fish much. They just kill em and let em sit in there freezer for a couple of years and go to waste. Have you ever tasted a fish that’s been in the freezer for two years wrapped in a piece of plastic and not even vacuum sealed? It ain’t good. Tastes like freezer burnt cotton. I’ve had people give me fish like that. Such a waste. That fish just as well have been left to reproduce vs killed and left to go to waste. Vacuum sealed it only good for about 6 months in the freezer. I don’t keep more than I can eat in that amount of time.
