I Handed Off A Bigger Fish To My Wife

When we got our first boat years ago we were basically fishing for trout and kokanee, I don't think she'd ever caught anything bigger than the three and five pound browns she caught one right after another fishing at the Topaz Lake outflow. We were kokanee fishing and I hooked a Mackinaw. After setting the hook I knew it was a really big fish, it felt like trying to pull up a log off the bottom. I set the drag fairly solid and told my wife to take it, she argued with me, and said she'd lose it, what if I lose it? I told her so what, it wasn't like I was going to get pissed off at her, I convinced her to take it, and her excitement over how hard it pulled when it would head back down after coming up a bit was worth letting her get it. It gave me a chance to get her to understand the mechanics of pressuring up without cranking the reel, letting the fish go, and reeling in gains that had been made.

I had as much fun watching her as I'd have had reeling it in myself, more actually. It was probably about a 12 pounder, and we found out our nets were way too small. Her Mack got fileted and baked and some smoked, smoked being our preference.

Ain't it fun when you're fishing for 1 pounders and you latch onto a 12 or 15? That's surf fishing at it's best - you go loaded for 1 or 2 pound surf perch and hook up with a 10 pound halibut or a striper. Sure makes it interesting. I've tried over the years to get mrs s into fishing, she's never caught the bug and she has caught some nice fish. Just ain't for her.
Oh well. As Osgood Fielding III said..............

My wife never fished before I met her, took her to the Mississippi where I have a cabin. Spent the day watching her catch Smallmouth one after another. That evening I took her back out and she caught quite a few Walleye after dark from the same wing Dams she got the Smallmouth. When I ask her where we were going on our honeymoon
she told me (we ) were going deep sea fishing and she caught a 120 lb. Tarpon with a Flipping stick I built for her, pretty good feat on a 7 1/2 foot Bass rod. In the 30 years we have been married she has won a couple dozen tournaments and broke a world record for Sturgeon 3 times in one afternoon (all released ) but one that didn't make it, I had it mounted for her. Best fishing buddy I ever had !
