So I have a boat with a 2 stroke 9.9 outboard. I have a couple of fish finders and a trolling motor. I have 1 deep cycle marine battery. Thinking of adding second battery. Anyone have thoughts on this or better ideas
Trolling motor on it's own battery. Everything else on the other. Now that's without knowing size of the boat and whether you have room.
So set each battery separate not in series
I never have the trolling motor on same circuit as electronics. When the trolling motor is used there is draw. Electronics don't like change in current.
You should be seeing interference on the FF when you run your trolling motor. If not your a lucky man. I have three batteries for the TM and a separate one for outboard/electronics.
No never really had an issue but to be honest my ff were not as good as some of the ones out there but I do have a newer one I will be adding this year and that could be an issue

Your finder draws next to nothing, compared a trolling motor. I may be mistaken, but I believe that your finder doesn't need a deep cycle, either. My finder runs on "C" cell flashlight batteries (Fishin' Buddy), but my friend runs his Garmin off a rather tiny 12v (3"x4"x6" ??) that he got at BPS, a pair and a charger were less than $100/all, I believe he said. Don't recall whether they were deep cycle or not.
I use Duracell AGM Deep cycle that are 35amp/hr, the "Jazzy Scooter" type @ "Batteries Plus" for~$90. 23lbs and 5 1/2"x6 1/2"x8". Use 2 in the lake boat, go all day using a 55lb thrust, no prob... barely get into the second, if at all, if I use the 34lb.
I have to concur that using separate motor and finder batteries would be wise.

You should run the trolling motor on a separate battery to avoid interference. Do NOT hook batteries in series unless you have a 24volt trolling motor. And you will fry your fishfinder with 24volts. Fix is correct, fishfinders don't draw much, and will run all day on a smaller battery. They sell portable battery packs for using fishfinder for Ice fishing. That's all you should need.
Great info thanks all for your tips

I run two batteries with my 18’ aluminum V bottom. I put new ones in this year and I can run 6 to 7 hrs. and only use 50%. You’ll be happy you did. 🐟on

You can put as many as you have room for, in parallel. (+2+; -2-)
I would put an isolator on main battery between it and the trolling deep cycle. Whenever main gas engine is running it will charge the deep cycle trolling battery. when engine is off it will be disconnected automatically. That will also help the electric noise. Solar Panels will also charge batteries. I have dreamt of having few large solar panels as a canopy and charging system.

You would be lucky to get 1amp out of a 9.9hp, if it even has a charging coil in it. With that low power for a main motor, you want as little weight in the boat as possible.
