I've never fished there, but it's well known for it's surf - that's where The Beach Boys were singing about - Surf City. I hear perch and halibut are plentiful. Surf perch don't get real big, so you'll want to go kinda light on your rod. There's a book available on Amazon - by Bill Varney called Surf Fishing: the Light Line Revolution. It's like 7 or 8 bucks. Get it. It's full of information about California surf fishing. Bill recommends plastic grubs, I like berkley sand worms and crabs - sand crabs are easily foraged and harvested right at the beach, shrimps and squids are pretty good, and if you want to just concentrate on the halibut get you a luckycraft surf pointer and show that. Be safe and don't turn you back on the surf. Get that book and good luck.

Thank you. I have that book. And thanks for the tip about Lucky Craft. Not new to surf fishing (I’m from the East Coast) just new to SoCal.

If you like to eat what you catch, you should target the halibut and cabezon. Cabezon's meat is blue (some people say green) but it turns white when it's cooked and they're one of the tastiest fish you're ever gonna eat. They like to hang out around rocks and sharp drop-offs. On that note, surf perch are not bad table fare either.

Thanks I’m pretty much catch and release. (Never cared for the taste of fish except shrimp)
If I know before I go that a friend wants them I’ll keep a couple.

Well if you happen to catch a cabezon you should try it, very firm mild meat - delicious in tacos!
