Not much help here as I fish Galveston bay,
But welcome to the stage
teamskpr: There are Forum members who live, or at least spend the winters down there. Some should be along soon. I once lived in the Rio Grande Valley and fished year around. I cannot recall bait being a problem. If live shrimp was available that was the No. 1 choice anytime. When you cannot buy live shrimp, then fresh dead or even frozen shrimp would work.
However, we had almost as much luck with what folks now call a Ned rig. I don't remember that it had a name then, bit was a rig with two jigs and plastic shrimp tails set perhaps a foot to 18 inches apart and fished at different speeds and different depths. Sometimes it helped to tip this with a small piece of shrimp. You might also refer to the post I made a few days ago of the Texas Fishing report for January. Just Sayin...RJS

Welcome to the Forum, teamskpr. We have just arrived in SPI, from MN., and haven't been out fishing yet, but I have fished all of those areas except Saucer. I don't know where that is, maybe I have fished it and didn't know it. I usually use live shrimp but I will toss a silver spoon for trout sometimes. Keep in touch, we will compare notes. Where are you in Port I?
just off 100 on champion street on the way to rv center
The Saucer in Port Isabel TX.
It is south of town, just east of the ICW. Usually turns on in the heat of summer. It is just a big depression out on the flats. Don't know for sure, but I suppose that the deeper water stays a bit cooler. The best trip I ever had in that area was when the tide blew out with a sustained SW wind. The rest of the flats were super shallow and HOT. The Saucer was about waist deep and stacked with fish.
I don't believe this is the same as the place I always heard called "The Shark hole" . Just Sayin...RJS
saucer, east of bennies shack, just south of port mansfield, or east of on water cabins and south...tmskpr
Following. I’m headed to SPI in February and hoping to do some wading in the surf and the Laguna Madre. I hadn’t been that far south in years and I’m excited to be going back

You had better hurry up and get down here or you will be walking on ice instead of wade fishing. I did bring my 8# fly rod down though. Let me know when you get here.
January has been a problem, The charter guy from across the way has been laying low, with cold weather, it is a time to rest, repair. Better weather on the way. furnace just kicked on so maybe going to be on the way.
Well we went to SPI the other day for Valentines. No chance to fish. 40f and the wind was howling. We ate good on the Island but no chance to fish do to the wind. It’s got frozen South now and that’s not good
Fished SPI and the Laguna today. Good times. Tide ain’t really right and no boat but we are fishing.
the guides have been bringing in good stringers lately, they have live shrimp and a supply from ? . local shrimpers i know still not getting enough shrimp to pay for fuel so maybe 2 to 6 dozen at best a crew went out this morning so will try and see what they caught when they come in if i am still around.. rumor is big fish in brownville turning basin in front of harbor master building
